Ethereum News Today: EigenLayer's Multi-Chain Verification Expands Restaking to Base Chain

EigenLayer has introduced a multi-chain verification feature, marking a pivotal expansion of its restaking infrastructure to Layer 2 networks, beginning with Coinbase’s Base chain. The protocol now enables Actively Validated Services (AVSs) to utilize EigenLayer’s staked
(ETH) and EIGEN tokens for securing applications on Base, a move designed to enhance scalability while preserving Ethereum’s security model. The feature debuted on Base Sepolia, a testnet variant, with a mainnet rollout anticipated in Q3 2025[1][2][4].The integration allows developers to deploy AVSs on Base by adjusting minimal contract parameters, reducing operational complexity and cost barriers compared to Ethereum’s mainnet. This aligns with Base’s position as one of the most active Layer 2 ecosystems, offering developers access to a broader user base without compromising decentralization[3][5]. By extending EigenLayer’s staked assets to Base, the protocol eliminates the need for cross-chain capital bridging, streamlining security for multi-chain applications[6].
EigenLayer’s multi-chain verification framework is part of its broader strategy to build a “verifiable cloud” for decentralized services, complementing the June 17 launch of EigenCloud. The protocol currently secures over $17 billion in staked ETH and EIGEN, according to DeFiLlama data, positioning it as a critical infrastructure layer in web3[1]. The July 22 introduction of EigenCloud’s Redistribution feature further demonstrates the protocol’s focus on flexibility, enabling AVSs to redirect slashed funds to users or cover losses rather than burning them[1].
Technical upgrades, including support for the BLS12-381 cryptographic curve and the MOOCOW validator efficiency update, underscore EigenLayer’s commitment to scalability and cost reduction[1]. Collaborations with partners such as Infura, LayerZero (ZRO), and Pier Two—which manages $1 billion in delegated assets—highlight the ecosystem’s growing adoption of EigenLayer’s tools[1].
The move reflects a broader industry shift toward “super-modular” architectures, where specialized blockchain layers collaborate to optimize performance and security. Vishnu Patankar, EigenLayer co-founder, emphasized Base’s strategic role as a first step due to its alignment with Ethereum’s infrastructure and growing adoption[7]. Analysts suggest the feature could accelerate restaking adoption on Layer 2s by simplifying cross-chain security management for developers[10].
EigenLayer’s timing aligns with Ethereum’s ecosystem momentum, including Layer 2 upgrades and rising institutional interest in staking. By leveraging Base’s developer community, EigenLayer aims to foster innovation in DeFi, data availability, and other use cases[11]. However, the initiative’s success hinges on developer adoption and maintaining Ethereum’s security standards across chains.
