Grok, an AI integrated into the platform X, has refused to assist the crypto influencer Crypto Rover in selecting a winner for a $1,000
giveaway. The decision was based on previous allegations of pump-and-dump schemes and overly aggressive token promotions involving Crypto Rover. The AI's refusal came after Crypto Rover tagged Grok to select a winner for the giveaway, which was organized following Ethereum's price surge above $3,750.Grok's response highlighted the influencer's involvement in a pump-and-dump scheme promoted in May 2023, as well as other sketchy promotions. The AI explicitly mentioned ZachXBT's investigation into Crypto Rover's STONED token dump, where the influencer received $10,000 and 1% of the supply for promoting it. Despite promising to hold the assets, Crypto Rover immediately sold the tokens, leading to significant losses for investors.
The AI's decision to abstain from selecting a winner was a clear indication of its commitment to ethical practices and transparency. By refusing to endorse potential risks, Grok demonstrated its ability to make informed decisions based on available data and investigations. This move underscores the importance of due diligence and accountability in the crypto community, where influencers often wield significant power over market sentiment and investor behavior.
The incident also highlights the growing role of AI in regulating and monitoring the crypto space. As AI technologies become more sophisticated, they are increasingly being used to detect and prevent fraudulent activities, ensuring a more secure and trustworthy environment for investors. The refusal by Grok to assist Crypto Rover serves as a reminder that AI can play a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of the crypto market, even in the face of influential figures who may prioritize personal gain over ethical considerations.
Crypto Rover, who has been active since the 2021 bull market, has a history of involvement in risky projects and rug pull tokens. Despite closing the related Telegram group, the influencer still reaches 1.2 million followers. The account mostly tracks the performance of Ethereum, linking the recent giveaway to new price milestones. Crypto Rover offers generic messaging on an upcoming altcoin season, especially linked to the performance of ETH. The influencer rarely presents specific altcoins, with the exception of WUD, a meme on the Polkadot ecosystem.
Crypto Rover has mostly caused indirect damage, especially when crashing the price of tokens. The actions of Crypto Rover are similar to those of other influencers, but the AI interaction shows agents are well aware of crypto scams and schemes, and may assist in informing potential investors. The reputation of Crypto Rover was first shaken following a community note in 2024. The AI warning extended the awareness of previous scams. However, Crypto Rover is still active and reaching new audiences who may not be aware of past promotions.
