Ethereum News Today:
Ondo Finance has launched its tokenized equity platform, Ondo Global Markets, offering non-U.S. investors access to over 100 U.S. stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) on the EthereumETH-- blockchain. This move marks a significant advancement in the tokenization of real-world assets (RWAs), as Ondo joins a growing list of platforms such as RobinhoodHOOD--, Gemini, and Kraken that are facilitating the on-chain trading of traditional equities. The platform is backed by securities held at U.S.-registered broker-dealers, ensuring that the tokenized assets are fully collateralized by the underlying securities. Assets include tokenized versions of major equities such as AppleAAPL-- (AAPL) and NvidiaNVDA-- (NVDA), as well as the QQQ ETF, allowing investors from Asia-Pacific, Europe, Africa, and Latin America to mintMIMI-- and redeem shares around the clock during trading days. U.S. investors are not eligible to access the service.
The platform is designed to enable seamless interoperability, with plans to expand its offerings to more than 1,000 assets by the end of 2025. Ondo also intends to support tokenized equities on other blockchain networks, including SolanaSOL-- and BNBBNB-- Chain, through LayerZero-powered cross-chain solutions. Nathan Allman, founder and CEO of Ondo Finance, emphasized that the platform’s approach mirrors the earlier success of stablecoins, which brought the U.S. dollar onto the blockchain. “Now, Ondo Global Markets is doing the same thing for U.S. securities,” he stated. This development aligns with the broader trend of tokenization across financial markets, with projects bringing treasuries, private credit, and now equities onto blockchains in pursuit of greater access and liquidity.
Ondo Global Markets has partnered with leading infrastructure providers such as BitGo, Ledger, ChainlinkLINK--, and 1inch to facilitate the rollout of its tokenized assets. These partnerships are crucial in ensuring secure, scalable, and efficient on-chain transactions. Furthermore, the platform has integrated Chainlink as its oracleORCL-- solution, providing reliable price data to support smart contracts and DeFi applications. Ondo’s tokenized equities are transferable across wallets, exchanges, and decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols, offering greater flexibility compared to traditional equity offerings. This feature enhances the utility of tokenized assets beyond mere trading, enabling deeper integration into the broader blockchain ecosystem.
Despite the promise of tokenized equities, the market has seen some backlash over potential issues such as limited shareholder rights and fragmented regulatory frameworks. Critics have raised concerns about the legal status of tokenized assets and the extent to which they replicate traditional shareholder protections. However, Ondo has positioned its platform as a solution to these challenges by emphasizing full backing of the underlying assets and access to traditional exchange liquidity. The firm’s approach appears to be gaining traction, with Ondo’s native token, ONDO, experiencing a modest price rebound amid broader market optimism. Analysts suggest that the launch of tokenized equities could further drive demand for ONDO, particularly if the platform expands its asset offerings and blockchain support.
The tokenization of U.S. securities also aligns with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) recent push to unify the regulation of traditional securities, tokenized securities, and non-security crypto assets under a single licensing framework. Ondo Finance has highlighted the regulatory environment as a key enabler for the adoption of on-chain financial products. As tokenized assets continue to gain institutional interest, the potential market for such products is expected to grow significantly. According to a recent report cited by The Block, tokenized financial assets could reach a market cap of $2 trillion by 2030. Ondo’s expansion into Solana and BNB Chain positions the firm to capture a larger share of this emerging market while also supporting cross-chain liquidity and accessibility.
Ondo Global Markets is available to qualifying non-U.S. investors and is supported by a range of crypto wallets, exchanges, and protocols. The platform aims to address historical barriers to U.S. securities markets, such as high fees, limited access, and geographic restrictions, by providing a seamless, on-chain solution. As tokenization continues to evolve, Ondo’s strategy to scale its asset offerings and expand blockchain support could position it as a leading player in the global tokenized equity market.
