Ethereum Lost 1.7 Million ETH From Exchanges-Why the $3,400 Test Matters More Now

Exchange supply has tightened, but price has not confirmed the bullish read
ETH is showing a clear supply squeeze even as the price continues to soften. Exchange reserves have fallen from about 16.8 million to 15.1 million, while the staking rate rose from below 30% to 33.9% and is now at an all-time 34.4%. Separately, more than 38.1 million ETH is staked. At the same time, ETH just recorded its first weekly loss in over a month, falling nearly 10% after a five-week winning streak.
Why the float matters
The liquid float appears to be shrinking. The validator entry queue holds 2,876,752 ETH against an exit queue of just 40,504 ETH, and whale wallets are withdrawing ETH at a pace that Glassnode's exchange net position change chart shows reaching depths approaching -1.2 million ETH on a single day in the final week of March. In a stronger demand environment, that kind of absorption usually supports price.
Price has not confirmed that setup yet. Recent ETH action has been driven mainly by spot market flows, which means supply data alone is not enough to reverse a weak tape. That is why the break below $3,400 during this pullback still matters more than bullish reserve charts on their own.
Weak demand is overpowering tighter supply
A simpler explanation fits the tape better: tight supply does not matter much when spot demand is soft and liquidity is thin. ETH is trading near $1,916.62 despite 43% bullish sentiment, while the broader tape still sits in Fear & Greed at 30. Because recent ETH action has been driven mainly by spot market flows, even moderate selling can move price more than scarcity models alone would suggest.
Sellers have still been active near resistance
This is not necessarily a failed structural setup, but it is a market where sellers have continued to show up at resistance. Throughout May, ETH struggled to hold above $2,300 as institutions remained net negative, and reclaim attempts near the 100 EMA were often rejected with weak volume. The takeaway is straightforward: the available float may be shrinking, but strong immediate buying has not returned.

The debate is timing, not existence
Bulls do have real evidence. A single whale bought roughly $300 million of ether during the pullback, and whales excluding exchanges added over $2B of ETH in May. Bears, however, still have the cleaner near-term flow metric: US spot ETH ETFs bled $401M net in May. That is the core tension in ETH right now-strong-hand accumulation is happening, but near-term price is still being led by weak spot demand and reactive leverage.
The key question is whether weakness can flush out late longs before steadier demand returns. If spot flows improve and buyers start reclaiming resistance, a constrained float can reprice quickly. If not, the market may remain range-bound or vulnerable to sharper downside.
What would confirm the ETH squeeze trade?
The trigger
The setup becomes more interesting because spot ETH ETFs flipped back to buying, taking in about $84.42 million for the week ending July 11. That was the first positive week after an 8-week outflow streak, which matters because ETH has recently been driven mainly by spot market flows while sentiment still sits in Fear & Greed at 30. One green week is a trigger, not proof.
Confirmation and invalidation
Confirmation would look like follow-through: another week of ETF inflows, firmer spot demand, and a sustained reclaim of resistance levels that sellers have defended. Invalidation would be a return to weakness, starting with a slip back under the low-$3,400s, then a break below the low-$2,000s while trading remains vulnerable in shallow spot and CEX liquidity. That would raise the risk of liquidation cascades and heightened volatility rather than a confirmed bullish reprice.
For now, the disciplined read is to wait for confirmation. Scarcity alone has not fixed the chart; demand still has to prove it is back.
