Ethereum Launches Hoodi Testnet for Pectra Upgrade

The Ethereum Foundation has announced the launch of a new testnet, Hoodi, to complete the testing of the Pectra upgrade. This move follows previous attempts on the Sepolia and Holesky testnets, which encountered several configuration issues. The Hoodi testnet is scheduled to go live on March 17, providing a final opportunity to demonstrate the code update before its deployment on the mainnet.

The Pectra upgrade introduces several significant changes to the Ethereum network, aimed at making it faster, more efficient, and more user-friendly. One of the most notable improvements is the addition of smart contract functionality to addresses, allowing user wallets to be programmed with new features such as paying transaction fees in currencies other than ETH. This upgrade is crucial for enhancing the network's scalability and improving staking flexibility.

Tim Beiko, the coordinator of the Ethereum ecosystem’s core developers at the Ethereum Foundation, highlighted the importance of the Hoodi testnet. He stated that if the test is successful, developers will launch the upgrade after 30 days, subject to further testing. If everything proceeds as planned, Ethereum users can expect the Pectra upgrade to launch on the mainnet by April or May.

The complications encountered on the Sepolia and Holesky testnets underscore the challenges faced during the testing phase. These test networks are designed to mirror the Ethereum mainnet but are free to use and do not support real value. Upgrades like Pectra are implemented on these test networks before being deployed on the mainnet to avoid potential disruptions. The Pectra setback comes at a time when Ethereum is facing significant pressure due to declining ETH prices and growing competition from newer chains.

The Pectra upgrade includes several key enhancements, such as account abstraction (EIP-7702), which allows users to pay transaction fees in currencies other than ETH. Additionally, the upgrade introduces roll-out Staking Enhancements (EIP-7251), increasing the validator staking limit from 32 to 2048 ETH. Other major EIPs include EIP-7691, which proposes an update to improve scalability and reduce network congestion, EIP-7623, which enhances privacy by allowing users to hide specific transaction details, EIP-2537, which optimizes contract execution, reducing gas costs and improving smart contract efficiency, and EIP-7549, which improves interoperability between different Ethereum Layer2 networks.

The launch of the Hoodi testnet is a critical step in the preparation for the Pectra upgrade, ensuring that the Ethereum network can handle the changes effectively. Ethereum core developers have emphasized the importance of thorough testing to identify and address any potential issues before the upgrade is deployed on the mainnet.
