Ethereum Co-Founder Sees Potential to Surpass Bitcoin
Ethereum co-founder Anthony Di Iorio recently shared his perspective on the relationship between Ethereum and Bitcoin, stating that Ethereum was not intended to be a competitor to Bitcoin but rather an alternative. He made these remarks during a speech at Consensus 2025, where he reflected on the early days of Ethereum and the sense of momentum he felt during that time. Di Iorio recalled that he and his fellow co-founders could sense that Ethereum was gaining traction and had the potential to become a significant movement.
Di Iorio's journey into cryptocurrency began with his advocacy for Bitcoin. He organized Bitcoin meetups in Toronto in 2012, which is where he met Vitalik Buterin, the creator of the Ethereum whitepaper. Buterin shared his vision with Di Iorio and the other co-founders, leading to the development of the Ethereum blockchain. Despite his early involvement with Bitcoin, Di Iorio has expressed his belief that Ethereum has the potential to surpass Bitcoin in terms of market capitalization due to its numerous use cases and the value it creates.
After leaving the Ethereum Foundation, Di Iorio founded Decentral in 2014, which is renowned for developing the Jaxx Liberty crypto wallet. In 2022, he launched Andiami, a project that combines hardware, tokenomics, and game theory to address centralization issues within decentralized networks. This project aims to bring blockchain technology to a broader audience by making it more accessible and user-friendly.
Di Iorio's comments highlight the evolving landscape of cryptocurrency, where different blockchain technologies are seen as complementary rather than competitive. His insights provide a valuable perspective on the potential for Ethereum to grow and innovate, driven by its diverse applications and the value it brings to users. As the cryptocurrency ecosystem continues to develop, the relationship between Ethereum and Bitcoin will likely remain a topic of interest and debate among industry experts and enthusiasts alike.
