The Ethereum Foundation (EF) has launched the "Silviculture Society," an external advisory group aimed at safeguarding the core principles of Ethereum's blockchain. This move comes as the broader crypto industry faces debates about its future and leadership.
The Silviculture Society, comprising 15 external members, will provide informal guidance and advocate for Ethereum's foundational principles: open source, privacy, security, and censorship resistance. The group includes individuals like Matthew Green, a cryptography professor at Johns Hopkins University, and Lefteris Karapetsas, co-founder of privacy-protecting software Rotki. Pseudonymous members, such as "Aleph" and "dystopiabreaker," also contribute to the group's commitment to privacy and decentralization.
The creation of the Silviculture Society coincides with a broader conversation about the changing ethos of the cryptocurrency industry. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has expressed concern about the increasing acceptance of "blockchain-based casinos" in the space. Buterin's outspoken position has sparked debate within the community, with some criticizing Ethereum for not facilitating
platforms. The Silviculture Society is seen as a way to ensure that Ethereum remains committed to its ideals. The EF has demonstrated its support for core values by pledging $1.25 million for the legal defense of Alexey Pertsev, a developer of Tornado Cash, an ETH mixer that helps users obscure transactions on the Ethereum blockchain. The EF's stance reflects its belief that developers should not be punished for building tools with both beneficial and malicious potential.
The launch of the Silviculture Society also comes amidst internal shifts at the Ethereum Foundation, with Aya Miyaguchi taking on the role of President after serving as Executive Director for seven years. The new advisory group is focused on protecting the core ethos of Ethereum as the Foundation navigates the complexities of the Ethereum ecosystem.
The EF has faced past criticism, some of which has been constructive. However, the introduction of the Silviculture Society shows that the Foundation is taking steps to protect the Ethereum ecosystem and reaffirm its commitment to the founding principles of Ethereum and the importance of a solid ethical framework.
