The Ethereum Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the Ethereum blockchain, has announced the distribution of $32.6 million in grants during the first quarter of 2025. This significant allocation was made through the organization's Ecosystem Support Program (ESP), which aims to foster growth and innovation within the Ethereum ecosystem.

The grants were distributed across various categories, including community and

initiatives, zero-knowledge and cryptography projects, execution layers, developer experience and tools, layer-2 networks, and overall ecosystem growth and support. This diverse allocation reflects the Ethereum Foundation's commitment to supporting a wide range of projects that contribute to the development and sustainability of the Ethereum network.

Of the 101 grants awarded, 32 were directed towards community and education-focused initiatives. These grants supported educational content creators, conference organizers, bootcamps, and hackathons such as ETHPrague and ETHiopia. The focus on education and community engagement underscores the Foundation's belief in the importance of fostering a knowledgeable and active user base.

Sixteen projects received grants to improve the developer experience and tooling. These projects included the development of software-development kits (SDKs), analytics platforms, and validator tooling. Additionally, several projects addressed Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) accessibility, ecosystem tools, and language support libraries, further enhancing the developer ecosystem.

Fourteen grants were awarded to projects in the cryptography and zero-knowledge proofs (ZK-proofs) category. These projects focused on developing cryptographic techniques, building ZK-proof technology, and researching security and post-quantum cryptography. The emphasis on cryptography highlights the Foundation's commitment to advancing the security and privacy of the Ethereum network.

Seven grant beneficiaries were focused on execution layer projects, while another seven were dedicated to the consensus layer. These grants aimed to enhance the performance and efficiency of the Ethereum network. Additionally, nine grant beneficiaries were focused on protocol, general growth, and support, ensuring the overall health and development of the ecosystem.

An additional 13 grants fell under an “other” category, encompassing areas including decentralized finance, DApps, stablecoin infrastructure, and business development. This broad range of support demonstrates the Foundation's holistic approach to ecosystem growth, addressing various aspects of the Ethereum network.

On May 7, Ethereum’s much-anticipated Pectra upgrade went live on the mainnet. The update, which started on epoch 364032, included three Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs): EIP-7702, EIP-7251, and EIP-7691. The upgrade focused on improving layer-2 scaling,

, validator user experience, and smart account wallet user experience features. This upgrade is a significant step forward in enhancing the functionality and user experience of the Ethereum network.
