The Ethereum Foundation (EF) has announced a significant leadership shake-up and a refreshed strategic vision, marking a transition period for the organization. The new co-executive directors, Hsiao-Wei Wang and Tomasz K. Stańczak, have outlined their plans in three coordinated blog posts published on Monday, 28 April. The duo, who have been jointly leading EF for nearly a month, signaled the end of a quiet handover period and the beginning of an assertive push to redefine the foundation’s internal governance and external priorities.
The new co-executive leadership model is designed to address single-point fragility, ensuring that the foundation operates as a united team with shared goals. Wang and Stańczak emphasized that their relationship is built on mutual respect, trust, and shared values, aiming to collaborate closely and challenge each other constructively. Their goals for the next 12 months focus on three technical fronts: scaling the Layer 1 mainnet, scaling data-availability “blobs,” and improving user experience across Layer 2s and the application layer. Stańczak pledged to prioritize speed of execution, accountability, and clear metrics to track progress, while ensuring that the Ethereum mainnet remains a global, neutral network.
The structural revamp extends beyond management. The EF board, described as a security council to protect the foundation’s core values, is responsible for vision-level oversight and regulatory compliance. Vitalik Buterin retains a board
and continues to provide technical and intellectual guidance. The current four-member board includes EF president Aya Miyaguchi, Swiss counsel Patrick Storchenegger, and Wang herself. Stańczak’s operational mandate is time-boxed to a two-year term to leverage his strategic-execution expertise during a busy period for the Ethereum ecosystem. Wang’s dual roles on both the board and management are intended to bridge between the board, executives, and management. In a third post titled The Ethereum Foundation’s Vision, Miyaguchi and Buterin re-cast EF as the steward of an “Infinite Garden,” emphasizing resilience amid changing environments. They described the foundation’s philosophy of “purposeful subtraction,” summarizing it as doing what no one else can do today and helping others do tomorrow what only EF can do today. The document commits EF to maximizing meaningful Ethereum usage while ensuring the resilience of Ethereum’s technical and social infrastructure. This resilience is defined by ecosystem autonomy, diversity of development teams, and adherence to core values such as censorship resistance, open source, privacy, and security.
Wang’s immediate priority is strengthening EF’s operations to support the ecosystem’s growth, with a focus on the application layer. She aims to improve developer and user experience, clarify standards, strengthen ecosystems, and smooth the journey from ideas to live applications. Stańczak, still involved with Nethermind and venture affiliations, will concentrate on protocol-level scalability and Layer 2 architecture. Both directors underscore the importance of community visibility, with plans to give applications and Layer 2s more presence and attention at events like Devcon. They also promise to accelerate EF’s communication
and engage in difficult dialogues without delay. All three posts converge on a single imperative: 2025 must be the year Ethereum proves it can scale without compromising its ethos. The co-executive directors describe the coming months as a journey through one of the most inspiring technological and societal shifts, while Miyaguchi and Buterin remind readers that Ethereum’s greatest advantage is its unparalleled ecosystem. The new dual-leadership model will be tested on its ability to translate this advantage into tangible progress on mainnet throughput, blobspace efficiency, and cross-rollup user experience. For now, the foundation’s message is clear: the guard has changed, but the values remain unchanged.
