Ethereum's ETH nears 450% rally level against Bitcoin

Ethereum's Ether (ETH) token is nearing a pivotal price level against Bitcoin (BTC), a zone that historically signaled the start of a significant rally. The ETH/BTC pair is currently trading around 0.019 BTC, inching closer to 0.016 BTC, the same level it reached in September 2019 before surging nearly 450% over the subsequent year. The current market conditions bear a striking resemblance to those of 2019, characterized by an oversold relative strength index (RSI), prolonged periods below key moving averages, and extended declines.

In 2019, the ETH/BTC pair had plummeted over 90% in the preceding two years, largely due to the collapse of initial coin offerings (ICOs). Similarly, as of 2025, the pair has declined over 80% from its 2021 peak, burdened by doubts surrounding Ethereum’s transition to proof-of-stake (PoS), intensifying competition, and Bitcoin’s increasing appeal as an institutional asset. In response to these challenges, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has outlined new architectural designs and protocol-wide standards aimed at simplifying, accelerating, and enhancing the maintainability of Ethereum to match Bitcoin’s standards within the next five years. An analyst has described Buterin’s proposal as “the most bullish thing for ETH.”

Amidst these developments, the ETH/BTC pair is attempting to break free from its multi-year “bearish parabola,” a resistance curve that has capped the pair’s upward movements since December 2021. However, this curve has shown signs of weakening as of May 3. Chartist Jimie noted that if this resistance holds, ETH/BTC could decline toward 0.016 BTC, the same level where it bottomed in September 2019 before its substantial rally.

Critics, including Bitcoin’s proof-of-work pioneer Adam Back, contend that Buterin’s proposals overlook fundamental design flaws in Ethereum. Back argues that Ethereum’s account-based system introduces unnecessary complexity compared to Bitcoin’s simpler UTXO (unspent transaction output) model, increasing technical risks and hindering scalability and security. Additionally, Back warns that Ethereum’s shift to PoS has centralized power among insiders by redirecting miner rewards to large tokenholders. He advised, “At this point, just flush ETH before it hits zero and buy Bitcoin,” suggesting that no upgrade can rectify what he perceives as Ethereum’s inherent flaws.
