Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has recently addressed and dismissed reports claiming dissatisfaction within his company about the pace of collaboration with
. These reports alleged that executives at Epic were frustrated due to Disney's slow decision-making process, which purportedly hindered progress on their joint venture within Fortnite. Sweeney refuted these claims, stating that the collaboration speed on projects such as Fortnite’s AI-powered Darth Vader character has been exceptionally swift, operating at about ten times the usual pace of media industry standards. Moreover, he noted that an official statement from Epic was provided but not published in the coverage. The partnership between Disney and Epic Games began with a substantial $1.5 billion investment from Disney in early 2024. The goal of this collaboration, internally known as "Project Bulldog," is to develop a broad Disney universe within Fortnite. This endeavor aims to weave characters and narratives from Disney's extensive portfolio—including franchises such as Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar, and Avatar—into Fortnite, providing an immersive and interactive environment for users.
Reports have suggested that this wide-ranging project, projected for a Fall 2026 release, faced internal challenges stemming from Disney's meticulous approval processes and concerns regarding content moderation, especially involving intellectual properties. One specific issue cited was an incident in which players interacted with an AI-powered Darth Vader character, manipulating him into making inappropriate statements. Although this was promptly rectified, it reportedly prompted Disney to reevaluate its comfort level regarding user-generated content and creative freedoms.
Nevertheless, both Disney and Epic are committed to their shared vision of a dynamic, interconnected digital space within Fortnite. At the Unreal Fest in 2025, Disney emphasized the importance of engaging the creator community in bringing this vision to life, underscoring fans' ability to craft their own narratives and experiences within the game.
Sweeney's firm rebuttal of the claims concerning any displeasure with Disney points to a deep and effectively synchronized collaboration. While challenges such as content moderation and IP management are inevitably part of a project of this scale, both companies are reportedly focused on establishing a robust framework to manage these aspects while facilitating creative freedom.
Epic Games, alongside maintaining this ambitious venture with Disney, continues to advance its position in the digital and gaming industries. The company recently won a significant legal battle against Google over what's perceived as monopolistic practices in the Play Store ecosystem, reinforcing Epic’s commitment to developer rights and more open marketplaces.
As Epic Games weaves the expansive universe it envisions with Disney into the virtual fabric of Fortnite, observers and fans alike wait in anticipation for the project's realization and the novel experiences promised by this unique fusion of gaming and iconic storytelling.
