Enovix Corporation has established a Research and Development (R&D) Center of Excellence in Hyderabad, India to accelerate the development of its AI-2TM second-generation battery platform. The facility employs 40 engineers and scientists and uses advanced battery modeling and machine learning to accelerate prototype development. The AI-2 platform will be developed using Enovix's worldwide sites, reducing development time.
Enovix Corporation (ENVX) has announced the establishment of a Research and Development (R&D) Center of Excellence in Hyderabad, India, to expedite the development of its AI-2TM second-generation battery platform. The new 18,000-square-foot facility, located in the prestigious "HITEC City," is equipped with advanced battery modeling and cutting-edge machine learning technologies. The center employs 40 engineers and scientists, many of whom hold advanced degrees in electrochemistry and materials science.
The AI-2 platform development will leverage Enovix's global engineering sites to reduce development timelines. The Korean team will develop and manufacture the AI-2 silicon anodes, while the prototype batteries will be manufactured in Malaysia directly on Enovix's high-volume manufacturing (HVM) line. This approach aims to eliminate the significant time loss associated with transferring R&D processes to manufacturing, as experienced with the AI-1 technology.
The Hyderabad R&D Center will also conduct rapid materials evaluation, producing around 2,600 coin and small pouch cell prototypes annually. The facility can test up to 750 small cells simultaneously, utilizing electrochemical and mechanical modeling to maintain mechanical robustness while improving performance and energy density.
Enovix CEO Raj Talluri stated, "From my experience at building high-performance teams at TI, Qualcomm, and Micron, India has always had a tremendous depth of engineering talent. By integrating modeling, materials development, and rapid prototyping under one roof, our R&D Center accelerates innovation, as demonstrated with our AI-1 platform."
T.J. Rodgers, Enovix Chairman, added, "We took longer than desired to get the AI-1 production-worthy. The Hyderabad R&D center is a permanent organizational improvement to prevent such delays in the future. India's educational system, with institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) comparable to Cal Tech and MIT, ensures a robust talent pool."
The AI-2 platform development is expected to be completed by 2025, with the new center playing a pivotal role in achieving this goal. Enovix's mission to deliver high-performance batteries for various technology products aligns with the strategic expansion into the Indian market.
