Azule Energy and partners have discovered a hydrocarbon system at an offshore Angola project. The project is a joint venture between Eni and partners, and the discovery is a significant milestone for the company. The hydrocarbon system will provide valuable resources for the region and support the growing demand for energy. The discovery is a testament to Eni's expertise in the oil and gas industry and its ability to explore and develop new energy sources.
Azule Energy, a joint venture between BP and Eni, has made a significant gas discovery offshore Angola, marking a substantial milestone for the company and the region. The discovery, made at the Gajajeira-01 exploration well in the Lower Congo Basin, suggests gas volumes in place could exceed 1 trillion cubic feet, with up to 100 million barrels of associated condensate [1].
The Gajajeira-01 well, drilled by Azule Energy in April 2025, is the first dedicated gas exploration well in Angola. The well encountered gas- and condensate-bearing sandstones in the Lower Oligocene targets, designated LO100. The drilling operations continue, with the next expected target being the last interval of the Lower Oligocene LO300 [2].
Initial assessments confirm the presence of a hydrocarbon system, opening up new exploration opportunities in the area. Azule Energy, in collaboration with partners Equinor, Sonangol, and Acrep, will continue to evaluate the full potential of the discovery and determine the optimal development strategy.
This discovery comes at a critical time for Angola, which aims to boost its oil production and enter the gas and LNG export market. The country's current oil production stands at about 1.1 million barrels per day (bpd), down from a peak of 2 million bpd in 2008. The decline is partly due to underinvestment in offshore resources and higher development costs, prompting many companies to overlook Angola as an investment destination [1].
Angola's gas discovery could position the country as a significant player in the African gas market. Both BP and Eni, along with other energy majors, are active in LNG developments on the coasts of West and East Africa, with projects in Senegal, Mauritania, and Mozambique [1].
The discovery is a testament to Eni's expertise in the oil and gas industry and its ability to explore and develop new energy sources. Azule Energy's CEO, Adriano Mongini, noted that the success of the Gajajeira-01 well reinforces confidence in the potential of the Lower Congo Basin [2].
