The agreement involves a leading power generation EPC partner deploying Caterpillar generator sets. The hyperscaler partner remains unnamed — a choice that protects the company commercially but denies investors the ability to assess counterparty risk or project certainty. Revenue recognition across two years means the near-term cash impact is modest. The company's Q2 earnings call on August 11, just four days from now, will provide the first operational detail.

Now here's what the market is not pricing in — or is actively choosing to ignore.

Energy Vault's trailing twelve-month free cash flow is negative $99.46 million. Operating cash flow is negative $56.72 million. In Q1 2026 alone, the company burned $53.8 million in operating cash. The balance sheet holds $55.24 million in cash and cash equivalents, plus $61.9 million in restricted cash. The pivot itself deserves credit. Energy Vault started as a gravity-based energy storage hardware company. That business model has struggled to find commercial scale. Management's shift toward building, owning, and operating AI power infrastructure — integrating sodium-ion batteries from Peak Energy, modular data centers from Crusoe, and now this hyperscaler deal — is the right strategic move. Street consensus for the August 11 earnings call expects $127.4 million in Q2 revenue — a massive sequential jump from Q1's $21.9 million — and $0.01 EPS, the first positive earnings estimate after quarters of losses. If management delivers and uses the call to provide concrete execution timelines, milestone dates, and near-term cash visibility on the 1.25 GW deal, the stock could extend its recent 17% five-day rally. If the company restates the backlog without narrowing the timeline or addresses the cash runway question honestly, the market may recalibrate quickly. The stock has already traded between $1.34 and $6.65 over the past 52 weeks. That is the range of a name where execution risk and narrative excitement are at war.

Despite the genuine demand tailwind and the real strategic progress Energy Vault has made pivoting into AI infrastructure, in my opinion the company doesn't pass the screen on the metrics that matter most: free cash flow, balance sheet strength, and capital returned to shareholders. The thesis is directionally right, but the path from backlog to positive cash flow is long, dilution-heavy, and unproven.

But the execution risk, the convertible debt overhang, the negative free cash flow, and the back-end-loaded revenue timeline demand proof that the backlog converts to actual cash generation before committing new capital. The August 11 earnings call will be the first meaningful data point. Until then, the 12.88% move on this headline looks more like narrative-driven excitement than a re-rating supported by structural fundamentals.
