The US is urging South Korea to join forces in countering China's dominance in shipbuilding through potential industry cooperation. A senior official from Seoul's trade ministry said the US feels a sense of crisis about China's shipbuilding industry, which has surpassed South Korea's in size and quality. The US is looking to collaborate with South Korea to strengthen its shipbuilding capabilities.

In a significant development in international trade, South Korea and the United States are exploring strategic cooperation in the shipbuilding sector to counter China's growing dominance. The urgency of this partnership was underscored by an emergency forum held at the National Assembly complex in Seoul, where officials discussed South Korea's negotiation strategy for tariff talks with the US.

According to Chang Sung-gil, director general for trade policy at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the US has made South Korea's participation in its containment policy against China a prerequisite for bilateral cooperation in the shipbuilding sector [1]. The US views China's shipbuilding industry as a growing threat and seeks South Korea as a strategic partner to bolster its own shipbuilding capabilities.

This initiative comes amidst ongoing trade negotiations between Seoul and the Trump administration, with talks focusing on tariffs, non-tariff measures, and industrial cooperation. Korean Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo visited Washington this week to propose bilateral cooperation in manufacturing, particularly in the shipbuilding and semiconductor sectors, as a means to decrease South Korea's trade surplus with the US [1].

Chang Sung-gil noted that the US administration's baseline stance is for South Korea to invest more in the US and purchase more American goods, including agricultural products and energy. The US has already imposed 25 percent reciprocal tariffs on Korean products, effective August 1, and is calling for measures to reduce South Korea's trade surplus in the auto sector to secure lower tariff rates [1].

Last year, South Korea's trade surplus with the US in the automotive sector reached $32 billion, highlighting the need for strategic cooperation to address this imbalance. The US is looking to create a favorable environment for American shipbuilding companies by partnering with South Korea, which has traditionally been a leader in the industry.

As South Korea enters the final three weeks of ongoing trade negotiations, the potential for a strategic shipbuilding partnership with the US could be a game-changer in the global market. This cooperation could not only strengthen South Korea's position in the shipbuilding sector but also align with US interests in countering China's dominance.
