Last Saturday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk told video game developer John Carmack on X that the company’s full self-driving (FSD) technology would allow users to wear sunglasses from the upcoming 12.5 version.

The FSD’s attention monitoring system currently cannot work well with sunglasses because it tracks users’ eye movements to ensure they are paying attention to the road and ready to take over when needed.

However, Musk told Carmack that the problem should be solved with the software in the 12.5 version.

Carmack previously said on X that he was “very confident” after multiple two-hour drives in a Tesla FSD that he would win his bet with software engineer Jeff Atwood that self-driving cars would be in widespread commercial use in major cities by Jan. 1, 2030.

Carmack is a co-founder of id Software, the company behind popular games such as Doom, Wolfenstein 3D and Quake.

Carmack said about Tesla and FSD: “I now think they will get there without any research breakthroughs.” However, Musk responded that Tesla had breakthroughs too.

Musk said: “Tesla has done a lot of things that are considered ‘AI research breakthroughs,’ but we focus on making it work, not hype breakthroughs.”
