Elon Musk, the Chief Executive Officer of
Inc., has clarified his stance on his involvement with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). In a recent post, Musk stated that he is not stepping down from his role but will be reducing the time he allocates to the department. He emphasized that his involvement will continue, but with a decreased frequency, spending only one or two days per week on government matters as long as the president deems it necessary and useful.Musk's decision to reduce his time with DOGE comes as Tesla's performance has faced challenges, and his personal wealth has been affected due to his extensive involvement in government matters over the past three months. As a "special government employee," Musk is limited to working 130 days in any calendar year. President Donald Trump has acknowledged Musk's contributions but has also hinted that the billionaire entrepreneur may need to focus more on his companies.
Musk oversees five companies: Tesla, SpaceX, XAI, Neuralink, and The Boring Co. Tesla, being the only publicly traded company in his portfolio, has faced public protests as backlash to his influence in Washington has grown. Despite Musk's reduced involvement, DOGE is expected to continue its work on slashing the federal budget and cutting agency workers through mid-2026. However, there are concerns about who will take over day-to-day operations and whether the effort will lose momentum without its outspoken leader.
Some employees who were tapped to join the administration have already left their posts. Christopher Stanley, who leads cybersecurity at the social-media platform X and SpaceX, has returned to the private sector. Another Musk employee, Ryan Riedel, was named chief information officer at the Department of Energy but returned to his job at SpaceX just weeks after the appointment. These departures raise questions about the stability and continuity of DOGE's operations.
Musk's clarification on his reduced involvement with DOGE comes as the department continues to face scrutiny from lawmakers. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who largely supports Musk's mission, has indicated that DOGE's efforts to cut spending and reduce the federal workforce will require the votes of Republican senators. This underscores the political challenges that DOGE may face in the coming months.
Musk's decision to reduce his time with DOGE is a strategic move that allows him to focus more on his companies while still maintaining some involvement in government matters. However, it remains to be seen how this shift will impact DOGE's operations and its ability to achieve its goals. The department's future will depend on its ability to adapt to changes in leadership and continue its mission of cutting government spending and reducing the federal workforce.
