Elon Musk's political action committee, America
, is currently embroiled in a second class-action lawsuit. The lawsuit alleges that the committee failed to pay voters the rewards they were promised for signing petitions during the 2024 Trump campaign. The plaintiffs, who hail from Pennsylvania, Nevada, and Georgia, claim that America PAC did not fully compensate them for their efforts in collecting signatures. The lawsuit details that America PAC initially offered $47 per signature, which was later increased to $100. However, the plaintiffs assert that they have not received the full amount they were owed. One of the plaintiffs, Steven Reid, estimates that he is owed thousands of dollars in referral fees for the signatures he collected in Michigan and Georgia. The lawsuit also mentions that the plaintiffs are in communication with many other individuals who have similarly not received their full payments.
This is the second lawsuit filed against America PAC. A previous anonymous plaintiff from Pennsylvania claimed that Musk and the committee owed him $20,000 in signature fees. America PAC has denied any wrongdoing and stated that it is committed to paying for every legal petition signature.
During the final weeks of the election season, Musk also offered $1 million per day to those who signed the petition. This raised legal concerns as signers had to be registered voters. Another class-action lawsuit filed in November alleged that this was a fraudulent scheme, as the outcome was predetermined.
The lawsuit highlights the complexities and potential pitfalls of political action committees, especially when they involve high-profile figures like Musk. The allegations of unpaid rewards and the subsequent legal actions underscore the importance of transparency and accountability in political fundraising and campaign activities.
As the legal battle unfolds, it remains to be seen how America PAC will address the allegations and whether additional lawsuits will emerge. The outcome of this case could set a precedent for how political action committees handle rewards and compensation for their supporters.
