Elon Musk is facing backlash! Toronto has excluded Tesla (TSLA.US) from its electric vehicle subsidies.
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow announced on Monday that the city would no longer provide economic incentives for TeslaTSLA-- cars purchased through taxis or car-sharing services due to trade tensions with the United States. The city is promoting the adoption of electric vehicles purchased as lease vehicles, with drivers and owners seeing reduced licensing and renewal fees until the end of 2029 to help reduce emissions. However, as of March 1, Tesla cars will no longer be eligible for incentives, according to Chow during a press conference. She said after the press conference: "Leased vehicles, such as taxis, will have to find a different car. They can also buy other electric vehicles." She said the exclusion would continue until trade issues with the United States were resolved. Chow said the decision was directed at Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who is a senior advisor to U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump has called for the annexation of Canada and imposed tariffs on Canadian products, angering Canadians. "We definitely said that if you want to buy a Tesla, go ahead, but don't expect taxpayers' money to subsidize it," she said. Chow said the move would not have a significant financial impact.
