The demand for the electric grid is increasing due to widespread adoption of artificial intelligence, which requires significant amounts of electricity to operate. Data centers are providing a 24-hour connection to support AI technology, and the largest AI algorithms require between 1 and 5 gigawatts of electricity to operate. Experts predict that AI use will continue to increase.

The demand for the electric grid is surging due to the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), which requires substantial amounts of electricity to function. Data centers are playing a pivotal role in providing 24-hour connections to support AI technology, with the largest AI algorithms needing between 1 and 5 gigawatts of electricity to operate [1].

According to Gregory Allen, senior advisor with the Wadhwani A.I. center at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, "One gigawatt is about one Hoover Dam's worth of electricity. So, imagine five Hoover Dams being used to just power one data center full of one company's A.I. [1]." This underscores the significant strain that AI is placing on the grid.

The increasing complexity and need for updated infrastructure have put a strain on available resources. Data centers, often clustered in certain areas, are requiring more land, permits, and electricity. In the United States, President Donald Trump's executive orders have helped streamline some of the permitting processes [1].

Nuclear power is emerging as a reliable choice for tech companies due to its ability to operate at full capacity and provide a constant supply of electricity. Microsoft President and Vice Chair Brad Smith noted, "Nuclear power is a good source of electricity for A.I. and many other things as well. In the United States, we've gone many decades without adding new sources of nuclear power [1]."

France, recognizing the importance of AI, has also invested heavily in the sector. French President Emmanuel Macron and Microsoft President Brad Smith announced additional investments of €4 billion ($4.3 billion) in data centers and AI in France by 2027 [2]. This investment is part of France's broader AI strategy, which includes plans to create AI clusters and support startups.

However, challenges remain. France's complex labor laws and the dominance of the U.S. and Chinese AI markets pose hurdles. Despite these obstacles, French companies like NukkAI are making strides, developing energy-efficient AI that integrates human observation into its processes [2].

The demand for the electric grid is expected to continue growing as AI usage increases. Data centers and nuclear power are key components in meeting this demand. As AI technology advances, so too will the infrastructure required to support it, ensuring a reliable and efficient power supply for the future.
