Egypt to hike electricity prices by average 16% for some users
Egypt has announced an average 16% increase in electricity prices for higher residential consumption tiers, while commercial users face an average 20% rise, effective April 2026. The Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy stated that the hikes are limited to higher-use segments, with lower-consumption households—accounting for 40% of residential users— remaining unaffected. The ministry emphasized that the adjustments aim to ensure continued electricity supply across all sectors amid a severe global energy crisis.
The government has implemented additional measures to manage energy demand, including early shop closures, reduced street lighting, and a partial remote work regime. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly highlighted that Egypt's energy import bill more than doubled in March compared to January, driven by surging global fuel and oil prices. The increases are part of broader efforts to mitigate the financial strain caused by rising energy costs and to promote equitable distribution of the economic burden among different consumer groups.
