EDF to cut Cattenom reactor output from 1,300 MW to 677 MW

EDF, France's state-owned utility, has announced a significant reduction in the output of its Cattenom reactor. The decision comes amidst persistently low European power prices, which have eroded profitability for the leading nuclear power producer.

The company will decrease Cattenom reactor output from 1,300 MW to 677 MW, marking a substantial reduction in its nuclear capacity. This move is part of EDF's broader strategy to adapt to the current market conditions and maintain financial stability.

EDF's first-half core profit dropped by 17% due to low power prices, as reported on July 24, 2025 [1]. The company's earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) for the six months to end-June were 15.5 billion euros ($18.24 billion), down from 18.7 billion euros a year earlier. The company's net debt also decreased to 50 billion euros from 54.3 billion euros at the end of 2024.

Low power prices, driven by weak industrial demand and increased renewable energy generation, have continued to erode EDF's profitability. The company warned in February that its EBITDA could fall by as much as 9 billion euros this year due to weaker prices [1]. EDF is preparing to build six new reactors over the next 15 years, and the company will provide a cost estimate for these new plants by the end of 2025.

EDF's CEO, Bernard Fontana, stated that financing costs are under control, with new bond issues totaling around 7.4 billion euros and the decrease in interest rates and short-term debt [1]. The final investment decision for the new reactors is expected to be taken in the second half of 2026.

This strategic reduction in reactor output is a significant step for EDF to navigate the challenging market conditions and ensure its long-term financial viability.
