The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted flight trials of UAV-Launched Precision Guided Missile (ULPGM) V3, a next-generation munition designed for use with unmanned aerial systems. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh called it a major boost to India's defence capabilities, congratulating DRDO and industry partners for their role in the system's development. The ULPGM V3 features a passive homing system, enabling "fire-and-forget" targeting both day and night, with an operational range of up to 4 km during daytime and 2.5 km at night.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully conducted flight trials of the UAV-Launched Precision Guided Missile (ULPGM) V3, a next-generation munition designed for use with unmanned aerial systems. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh hailed this achievement as a significant boost to India's defence capabilities, congratulating the DRDO and industry partners for their contributions.
The ULPGM V3, also known as the Unmanned Launched Munition – Extended Range (ULM-ER), features a passive homing system with an imaging infrared (IR) seeker, enabling "fire-and-forget" targeting both day and night. The 12.5 kg missile is powered by a small dual-thrust solid propulsion unit, providing an operational range of up to 4 km during daytime and 2.5 km at night. Communication is facilitated via a two-way datalink, allowing for precise engagement of both static and moving targets.
This version of the ULPGM represents a significant upgrade over previous iterations, with enhancements in seeker technology, guidance systems, and overall performance. The DRDO led the design and development of the system, while key manufacturing partners include Adani Defence and Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL).
The successful trials come amidst a broader push by the Indian Army to accelerate domestic defence capabilities through live demonstrations of new technologies. The ULPGM V3 trial marks a clear step forward in the government's "Aatmanirbhar Bharat" and "Make in India" initiatives, underscoring India's commitment to self-sufficiency in defence production.
