July 2, 2025 — Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA), Spain's second-largest bank, has announced the launch of Bitcoin and Ethereum trading and custody services for retail customers through its mobile app. This move marks a significant milestone in BBVA's expansion of regulated digital asset offerings across Europe [1].
The service, which was approved by Spain's National Securities Market Commission (CNMV) in March 2025, allows customers to buy, sell, and hold crypto-assets within BBVA's existing digital banking environment. This development removes the need for customers to rely on third-party platforms or custodians, enabling independent transactions [1].
Gonzalo Rodríguez, Head of Retail Banking for Spain, stated that the goal of these services is to make it easier for retail customers to invest in crypto assets. "Our goal is to support them as they explore digital assets, backed by the strength and security of a bank like BBVA," he explained [1].
The service is compliant with the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation, which became effective in December 2024. MiCA sets standards for the provision of crypto-related services across member states of the European Union [1].
This launch is the third market where BBVA will offer its digital assets offering, following its entry into Switzerland in 2021 and Turkey in 2023. The Spanish launch is the first time BBVA is targeting retail customers directly in its core market [1].
Francisco Maroto, head of digital assets, highlighted the bank's journey in the crypto space. "Following this launch in Spain, BBVA has added another country to its digital assets service," he said. The company is actively growing its digital assets business, encompassing both cryptocurrencies and stablecoins, as well as traditional assets in tokenized form, such as bonds and funds [1].
BBVA's goal is to offer the best investment and transaction-based solutions to customers. The bank has previously expanded its crypto services in Switzerland to include Circle's USDC stablecoin for institutional traders [1].
