Dominion Energy Virginia plans to install a solar array at the Richmond Flying Squirrels' future CarMax Park stadium. The installation, expected to be among the largest in professional baseball, will generate 1 MW of carbon-free electricity, powering 250 homes at peak output. The project will contribute to Dominion Energy's goal of using previously developed land for power generation and add to the company's growing solar fleet in Virginia.

Dominion Energy Virginia has announced plans to install a solar array at the Richmond Flying Squirrels' future CarMax Park stadium, set to be one of the largest in professional baseball. The project, scheduled to commence post-2026 baseball season, involves installing over 1,700 solar panels on the stadium's two-tiered roof and five solar-covered carports in an adjacent parking lot [1].

The solar installation is expected to generate approximately 1 megawatt (MW) of carbon-free electricity, enough to power around 250 homes at peak output. The project aligns with Dominion Energy's goal of utilizing previously developed land for power generation and will add to the company's growing solar fleet in Virginia, which is currently the third largest in the United States, producing enough electricity to power over 750,000 homes at peak output [1, 2].

Ed Baine, Dominion Energy Virginia's Executive Vice President of Utility Operations and President, expressed enthusiasm about the project: "We’re thrilled that such an iconic Richmond landmark will help deliver reliable, affordable and increasingly clean power for our customers" [1]. The project is subject to local and state regulatory approvals.

Lou DiBella, Managing Partner of the Richmond Flying Squirrels, underscored the community impact: "This project isn’t just about what happens inside the ballpark; it’s about stepping up as a community partner and using our platform to help bring clean energy to the city" [1].

Laura Thomas, Director of the City of Richmond’s Office of Sustainability, highlighted the collaborative approach: "This solar project represents the kind of integrated, collaborative approach that’s essential to achieving Richmond’s clean energy goals" [1].

CarMax Park is expected to be completed by the start of the team's 2026 season and will serve as an anchor in the city's newly named Diamond District, currently under redevelopment.
