Disney+ has officially announced the cancellation of its 'Goosebumps' series, ending the show after its two-season run. This decision follows the premiere of the second season, which carried the subtitle "The Vanishing," launching in January 2025. Originally debuting in October 2023, the series was based on R.L. Stine’s celebrated children’s horror books and was developed for television by Nicholas Stoller and Rob Letterman. Despite its nods to the original anthology format, Disney+’s 'Goosebumps' attempted to modernize storytelling with serialized narratives across its two seasons.
The show's cancellation is part of a broader trend at Disney+ of trimming its lineup, choosing to focus on profitability amidst a competitive streaming market. Over its run, the 'Goosebumps' series garnered about 118 million viewing hours worldwide, with 75 million from the U.S. and an additional 43 million from 16 international markets. Despite its multinational viewership and ranking among Nielsen's top 10 original streaming series during its first month, the show's performance did not sustain upon the release of the second season, failing to secure a spot in the Nielsen charts.
'Goosebumps' Season 1, released weekly with stories encapsulated in 10 episodes, brought together a high school group woven into a sinister narrative revolving around Harold Biddle's mysterious death. The second season shifted gears, introducing a fraternal twin storyline amidst mysterious occurrences post a family move. This inventive venture explored prevailing themes found in R.L. Stine's original tales, though the execution attempted to appeal with diverse modern narratives.
While no formal rationale was shared behind 'Goosebumps’ cancellation, existing strategies at
point to a refocused approach prioritizing content that meets rapid viewership and engagement benchmarks. Nevertheless, the series producer, Pictures Television, intends to shop the show to other networks, with a view of potentially exploring different creative avenues for the underlying intellectual property. The impact of the cancellation echoes a certain disappointment among fans, who were drawn in by familiar episodes rooted in R.L. Stine's popular stories, including episodes like “The Haunted Mask” and “Stay Out of the Basement.” The cast of well-known actors, including Justin Long and David Schwimmer, attracted a diverse audience base eager to see how this nostalgic adaptation could evolve within the contemporary scene.
Further discontent follows a broader context of Disney's other cancellations. The landscape remains tenuous, with the entertainment giant perpetually adjusting its strategy to sustain its competitive edge within the saturated streaming service climate. Some shows from Disney+ are being revived via other streaming platforms, and it is conceivable that 'Goosebumps' may find a future beyond the present circumstances. Still, the situation leaves a sense of opportunity missed, as many narratives remain unresolved.
In an environment characterized by corporate restructuring and fiscal vigilance, Disney continues to balance its portfolio, selectively promoting content that promises tangible outcomes. Despite the prevailing disappointment for 'Goosebumps' enthusiasts, Disney+ persists in introducing fresh installments to its offerings, reflecting a commitment to diverse content while navigating the dynamic streaming service landscape.
