Dimensional Innovations used nine Epson laser projectors to create a digital bird sanctuary experience for patients receiving burn treatments at Children's Mercy Kansas City burn clinic. The immersive and interactive experience was designed to put children at ease during treatment, and patients could customize their experience by choosing the type and number of birds, lighting, and music. The projectors projected the patients' creations throughout the hallways and treatment rooms, creating a positive distraction and uplifting environment.

Children's Mercy Kansas City burn clinic has introduced an innovative digital bird sanctuary experience, designed to alleviate stress and anxiety for young patients undergoing burn treatments. This immersive and interactive environment was created by Dimensional Innovations (DI) in collaboration with Epson, utilizing nine laser projectors to project customized bird animations, lighting, and music throughout the clinic.

The project, initially conceptualized by BSA LifeStructures, aimed to provide a positive distraction that would enhance patient comfort without disrupting clinical workflows. DI, an experience design firm, was tasked with reimagining the physical and digital experiences at the burn clinic. The result is a collection of bird animations that patients can customize, choosing the type and number of birds, lighting, and accompanying music.

The digital bird sanctuary experience is particularly effective in preventing traumatic associations with specific environmental elements, as the clinic's environment can change over time. For instance, a room that appears pink during a stressful visit can look entirely different during the patient's next visit, helping to reduce stress and anxiety.

Epson laser projectors, including six Pro L1070UNL high lumen models and three BrightLink® 1480Fi ultra short throw interactive laser displays, were used to create this experience. The projectors' ability to provide high color representation and their ultra short throw setups allowed DI to create an impactful experience in the clinic's limited space.

Since its launch, the digital bird sanctuary has proven to be a safe, serene, and sustainable positive distraction for pediatric patients and staff. The project underscores the potential of technology to enhance patient experiences and improve clinical outcomes.
