DHL Lifted Its 2026 Profit Target to €6.5 Billion. Is That Real Strength or Just a Tariff-and-Air-Freight Bounce?

DHL's €6.5 Billion Target Is Credible, but Not Entirely Clean
DHL's upgrade is real, but it mixes durable demand recovery with some favorable comparison and market-disruption effects. Management lifted its 2026 Group EBIT target from above EUR 6.2 billion to above EUR 6.5 billion after a quarter in which Group revenue increased by more than 10 percent and Group EBIT reached around EUR 1,850 million, up around 29 percent.

Express Is the Core Strength
The clearest source of confidence is DHL Express. The division posted around EUR 1,195 million in Q2 EBIT versus EUR 730 million a year earlier, supported by the return to weight growth and a very favorable operating leverage effect. That points to a real rebound in time-critical shipment demand rather than a purely statistical improvement.
Part of the Bounce Still Depends on Air-Freight Tightness
Not all of the improvement looks equally recurring. DHL said Express results were further supported by around EUR 150 million driven by capacity constraints in the air freight market. It also noted that the prior-year quarter had been distorted by customs and other trade policy conditions. In other words, some of the upside is tied to a softer base year and a tighter routing environment that may not persist.
That doesn't weaken the entire upgrade. It just means investors should separate lasting Express demand recovery from temporary pricing and comparison effects when judging how much weight to give the new €6.5 billion target.
