Delta Airline Flight Turbulence Forces Emergency Landing; 25 Hospitalized Amid Severe Conditions

Severe turbulence resulted in an emergency landing for Delta Flight DL56, traveling from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam. Enroute, the aircraft encountered tumultuous conditions over southwestern Wyoming, leading to disarray within the cabin and injuries among passengers and crew members. Joseph Carbone, who was aboard the flight, expressed the harrowing experience as if "the plane was tearing apart," noting how flight attendants and service items such as wine carts were violently thrown within the cabin. Another traveler, Leslie Woods, likened the experience to feeling earthquake-like forces, notably affecting the composure of younger passengers.

Aviation forecasters had earlier warned of potential thunderstorms across southwestern Wyoming, issuing a SIGMET advisory alerting pilots to significant atmospheric disturbances. Despite these advisories, the turbulence manifested unexpectedly at the cruising altitude of 35,000 feet, where the aircraft faced the rise and fall of tumultuous air associated with nearby thunderstorms.

Following the safe landing in Minneapolis, Delta offered assistance to passengers, providing lodging, rebooking flights, and access to amenities such as the Delta Lounge. The company also arranged a special flight to Amsterdam to accommodate those impacted by the incident.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the mid-flight turbulence. These investigations will assess factors including weather patterns and pre-flight weather advisories.
