DC Mayor Muriel Bowser reports a sharp reduction in violent crime, citing a 87% drop in carjackings over the past 20 days. She credits the federal surge of officers and expresses support for President Trump's $2 billion infrastructure request. While acknowledging ongoing police-community trust concerns, Bowser emphasizes the need for federal resources to address violent crime and community support.
Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has announced a significant reduction in violent crime, including an 87% drop in carjackings over the past 20 days. This decline is attributed to the federal surge of officers deployed by President Trump. Bowser expressed her support for Trump's $2 billion infrastructure request, while also acknowledging ongoing concerns about police-community trust.
The mayor highlighted that since Aug. 7, overall crime in the District has decreased by 15% compared to the same period last year. Violent crime has nearly been cut in half, falling by 45%. Specific categories of crime have also shown substantial declines, with homicides down 38%, sex abuse down 44%, and robberies down 62% [1].
The most significant reduction, however, has been in carjackings, which have plummeted by 87%. Only four instances have been recorded during the federal surge, compared to 31 during the same period last year [1]. This decrease is particularly notable given that the number of carjackings in the district had been rising annually since 2018, with a peak of 959 cases in 2023 [1].
Mayor Bowser has acknowledged the need for federal resources to address violent crime and community support. She has praised the federal surge for enhancing the city's crime-fighting capabilities and has expressed her support for Trump's infrastructure request. However, she has also criticized certain tactics used by federal law enforcement, such as the presence of "masked ICE agents" and National Guards from other states, which she believes have not been effective [2].
The federal control of the city has been expanding, with the Transportation Secretary announcing renewed control over Union Station on Wednesday [2]. Despite the criticism, Mayor Bowser has stated that Washington would be prepared to take advantage of additional federal officers when the current 30-day period expires.
Meanwhile, in the financial markets, the Crypto.com token (CRO) has surged significantly, with a 37.6% increase in 24 hours, reaching a near-three-year high of $0.2869 [3]. This surge follows a definitive agreement between Yorkville Acquisition Corp, Trump Media & Technology Group, and Crypto.com to form Trump Media Group CRO Strategy, Inc., a digital asset treasury vehicle targeting the Cronos ecosystem-native CRO.
