Dassault's Vortex spaceplane: a free call option on Europe's orbital future


In May 2026 Dassault Aviation, the French maker of Rafale fighter jets and Falcon business jets, announced that it and OHB, a German space group, would propose a reusable orbital spaceplane to the European Space Agency (ESA). The vehicle, called Vortex, is to fly to an orbiting station, loiter as an autonomous lab, and return to land on a runway "like an aircraft". Dassault calls the concept "disruptive". To a retail investor who follows the company mainly for its order book and dividends, the spectacle is easy to mistake for a change in the investment case. It is not. But understanding why is worth a few minutes.
The first thing to grasp is how small the story is beside the business that actually pays for it. At the end of 2025 Dassault's backlog stood at €46.6bn, built on orders for 220 Rafales and 73 Falcons. Net sales that year were €7.4bn; adjusted net income was €1.06bn and the firm held €9.4bn in cash. Its market capitalisation is roughly $25bn. The whole company trades for a fraction of the work it already has booked. Self-financed research and development, the pot from which any spaceplane work must come, fell to €389m in 2025 from €437m the year before and kept shrinking in the first half of 2026. Space, in other words, is a niche inside a company that is, at heart, a fighter-jet and business-jet manufacturer.
So why is Dassault doing this at all? The honest answer is that Europe has a launch problem with no solved exit, and a spaceplane is a plausible claimant on the money that will eventually be thrown at it. Russia's withdrawal left Europe without its workhorse Soyuz rocket; for a period the European Space Agency and the European Commission used SpaceX's Falcon 9 because nothing else was available. Ariane 6 finally flew in July 2024, but Europe still lacks a homegrown, reusable, runway-returning vehicle, and its institutions now talk of launch capacity as a security matter rather than a commercial one. "Europe can no longer treat launch capacity as a secondary issue," Andrius Kubilius, the European commissioner for defence and space, said in September 2026. Sitting on that policy wind is precisely where a firm with sixty years of studying winged spacecraft, and a record of assembling complex airborne systems, wants to be.

The obstacle is that orbits are not awarded for charisma. ESA already has its own reusable program, Space Rider, an uncrewed lab launched on Vega-C, which has been through drop tests and is billed as Europe's first reusable space transportation system. And a runway landing, satisfying as it is, must compete on price with reusable rockets that already solved the reusability problem — SpaceX's Falcon 9 — and have a head start measured in hundreds of flights. Europe's history of such vehicles is a study in cancellation: Hermes, the crewed spaceplane of the 1980s and 1990s, never flew. The graveyard is a fact, not a precedent the company is obliged to repeat, but it is a real one.
Look closely at the current Vortex and the distance between ambition and hardware is plain. The program is staged from a one-third-scale flight demonstrator (Vortex-D), whose purpose is confined to validating control and risk during hypersonic re-entry, through a two-thirds-scale free flyer (Vortex-S), to full-scale cargo and eventually crewed versions. The May 2026 announcement concerned only the intermediate Vortex-S, and it was a teaming agreement with OHB to ask ESA for work. No funding has been committed, no flight date exists, no contract has been let; even the revenue path runs through an institutional customer that decides by politics, not by unit economics.
None of this makes Dassault a worse holding. For a staid compounder backed by €46.6bn of orders and a decade of visibility, a spaceplane is a free call option: cheap to keep alive with option-value R&D, quietly valuable if a security-minded Europe ever funds a sovereign reusable vehicle, and immaterial if it does not. The error to avoid is buying the marquee as though it were earnings. What would change the calculation is a specific, verifiable event: a state or ESA commitment in euros, a Vortex-D flying through a real re-entry, or an order for a crewed design. Until then the stock's worth rests, as it always has, on Rafale and Falcon — and the spaceplane is a story to watch, not a reason to own it.
