Custom Silicon Doesn't Just Hit AMD's GPU: The De-Rating Is the Risk-On Canary


AMD just published the strongest quarter in its history and the stock fell anyway. In the three months to June, revenue reached a record $11.54 billion, up 50% year over year, and the data-center segment — the part of the business that now matters most — grew 107% to $6.7 billion. The move looks like either a mispricing of a single stock or the first visible crack in a much broader trade. The distinction is worth the reader's time, because AMD's premium and the economics beneath it decide which it is.

Start with what the earnings actually said, because the collapse in the share price is the market answering a question AMDAMD-- did not pose. The revenue beat, the data-center surge, and EPS of $1.66 against $1.62 expected were all real. Adjusted earnings were $1.66, exceeding the estimated $1.62. The problem is that they were real in the way a stock trading near 60 times earnings already assumed — priced, as one strategist put it, for something much closer to a blowout. the stock was "priced for something much closer to a blowout"; Management guided the third quarter to roughly $13 billion, comfortably above the $12.5 billion consensus, but below the most aggressive buy-side calls as high as $14 billion. And it guided operating margin, the number that separates "good" from "exceptional," to hold steady at about 56% rather than expand. A stock that trades near 70 times forward earnings does not move up on "in line." It moves up only on "more than anyone paid for" — and nothing in the guide delivered that.
That framing — grow fast, still re-rate down — is where the single-stock explanation starts to look incomplete. AMD is not a fallen growth story; management guided data-center segment revenue to grow over 100% year-over-year in 2027 and server CPU revenue over 70%. The bull case is intact on the surface. The de-rating from roughly $575 in June to near $465 by late August, against a GuruFocus GF Value estimate of $276.60, is a market deciding that roughly 68% over intrinsic value and a high-six multiple offensive is no longer sustainable without evidence that non-GAAP margins will climb. Yet this is not the first high-multiple merchant AI name to be repriced this year: Broadcom fell after strong earnings but a softer AI outlook, and a semiconductor index plunged 10% in a week in June before rebounding. The common thread is not AMD execution and not AMD guidance. It is that the entire complex had been discounting reliable, expanding margin growth from vendors selling general-purpose AI silicon — and the market began to notice that the structure underneath that assumption is shifting.
The drain starts before AMD's GPU
The shift is custom silicon, and it does not begin as an AMD problem at all — AMD is downstream of it. Hyperscalers — Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta — have spent the last several quarters moving AI workloads onto accelerators they design in-house rather than buy from a merchant vendor. By 2026 the custom ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit) slice of the roughly $240 billion AI-chip market is about 20%, or $48 billion, with merchant GPUs still holding about 75%. Hyperscaler ASICs capture 20% of the market ($48 billion) The direction is what matters for AMD investors: the custom AI accelerator market is projected to grow at a 44.6% CAGR versus 16.1% for merchant GPUs, pushing custom silicon from 20% of the market toward 30% by 2030. These are not hypothetical roadmaps; Google's TPU "Ironwood," Microsoft's Maia, Amazon's Trainium, and Meta's MTIA are production parts being deployed by the hundred-thousand.
That is the GPU-stack pressure everyone can see, and it is real. It is also only half the mechanism. The hyperscalers who build their own accelerators build their own server CPUs too — Amazon's Graviton, Google's Axion, Microsoft's Cobalt — and Arm-based processors now hold 25% of the server market, up from virtually nothing a few years ago. Because a hyperscaler's in-house CPU is generally free to use at the margin and tailored to its own cloud, every x86 server AMD sells into the largest customers is competing against a chip those customers can make themselves. The merchant x86 addressable market, in the language of one industry analysis, has been "closed off" at exactly the moment AMD's EPYC line — the data-center CPU that powers the non-GPU half of its $6.7 billion data-center quarter — is carrying a large share of growth.
Put the two halves together and the value-capture story reads clearly. Every datacenter build AMD supplies now faces a structural margin lid: on the accelerator side from in-house AI ASICs, on the CPU side from in-house Arm parts. Design margin does not disappear; it migrates. A portion goes to the hyperscalers' in-house silicon teams, and a portion to the merchant vendors who design custom chips for them — Broadcom, Marvell, Alchip — which is why Broadcom has been reporting billions in quarterly AI revenue from exactly the type of custom work that used to belong to a merchant GPU vendor. The OpenAI-Broadcom $10 billion custom-inference-ASIC pact is the cleanest expression of the transfer. The merchant general-purpose vendors — NVIDIA, AMD, Intel — are the ones left paying the margin bill.
This is the part that makes AMD structurally different from a pure single-stock short. AMD is the only major merchant vendor that faces the custom-silicon drain on both of its data-center stacks at once, and it carries the widest premium-to-intrinsic-value gap of any name in the peer group. NVIDIA can argue that its software moat lets it sell general-purpose parts at a premium despite the same ASIC competition. AMD's own earnings call concedes the software stack against CUDA is the open question. So when AMD reports 107% data-center growth and still gets sold, the market is not saying AMD is broken; it is saying that for this class of stock, accelerating revenue is no longer sufficient when the margin path is capped and the multiple is steep. That is a signal about the whole merchant AI complex, not about one company.
What would falsify the read
A leading indicator earns its keep only if it can be proven wrong, and this one has a clean failure condition. The canary thesis holds that AMD's de-rating is the market repricing the durability of merchant-margin growth across the complex. It is falsified if AMD closes the gap to its intrinsic-value estimate from the top — that is, if data-center revenue keeps compounding and non-GAAP margins expand, so the premium is earned through appreciation rather than erased through price decline. So far the opposite has happened: the gap narrowed almost entirely because the price fell from $575 toward $465, not because the fundamentals caught up.
The forward observables are concrete and dated. Whether Q3 non-GAAP gross margin moves off the 56% plateau it has sat on for two quarters is the first tell — a flat margin against a 41%-growth guide is the exact pattern the market just punished. Whether the 2027 data-center forecast of over 100% growth lands with margins expanding rather than flat is the second. And the peer check is NVIDIA's next data-center outlook, because if NVIDIA's merchant-GPU premium holds while AMD's compresses, part of AMD's de-rating was company-specific execution risk after all. If, instead, Broadcom, Marvell, and the ASIC pipeline keep capturing the margin AMD no longer earns, then AMD's pullback was doing its real job: telling the rest of the high-multiple AI infrastructure complex that the price of merchant margin growth just went up. The de-rating is the canary. The question is only whether AMD is the stock investors use to hear it or the one they overpay to ignore.
