Crypto Plunge: Bitcoin, Ethereum Lead February Selloff
Crypto-linked assets wrapped in red for February as bitcoin, ethereum plunge
In February, a wave of selloffs hit crypto-linked stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs), mirroring the sharp decline in the prices of bitcoin (BTC-USD) and ethereum (ETH-USD). This marked the worst monthly performance for the two leading cryptocurrencies since the collapse of the crypto exchange FTX in 2022.
The selloff in the crypto market was driven by a combination of factors, including regulatory concerns, geopolitical tensions, and a broader market downturn. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has been cracking down on crypto-related securities, while the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has added uncertainty to the market.

Crypto-linked stocks, such as MicroStrategyMSTR-- (MSTR) and CoinbaseCOIN-- (COIN), were among the hardest hit. MSTRMSTR--, which holds a significant amount of bitcoin on its balance sheet, fell by more than 30% in February. Coinbase, a major cryptocurrency exchange, also saw its stock price plummet by more than 20% during the month.
ETFs that track the performance of the crypto market, such as the Bitwise Crypto Industry Innovators ETF (BITQ) and the VanEck Vectors Digital Transformation ETF (DAPP), also experienced significant losses. BITQ fell by more than 25% in February, while DAPPDAPP-- dropped by more than 20%.
