Crypto-Backed Republicans Win Florida Seats, Bolstering House Majority
In a significant development for the crypto industry, two Republicans backed by the crypto political action committee (PAC) Fairshake have secured victories in Florida's special elections for the 1st and 6th Congressional Districts of the US House. Jimmy Patronis and Randy Fine, both known for their support of the crypto industry, won their respective races with substantial margins.
Patronis, the current Florida chief financial officer, won the 1st Congressional District seatSEAT-- with 57% of the vote, defeating Democrat Gay Valimont. This seat had been vacated by Matt Gaetz. Meanwhile, Fine secured the 6th Congressional District with 56.7% of the vote, defeating his Democratic rival, public school teacher Josh Weil. This seat was previously held by Mike Waltz, who took a position as White House national security adviser.
The victories by Patronis and Fine are expected to bolster Republican representation in the House, increasing their total to 220 seats, while Democrats hold 213 seats. There are still two vacant seats to be filled in Texas and Arizona following the deaths of Democratic representatives Sylvester Turner and Raúl Grijalva.
Fairshake, backed by major crypto industry players including CoinbaseCOIN--, Ripple, and Andreessen Horowitz, contributed significantly to the campaigns of both Republicans. Fine received around $1.16 million in advertising spending, while Patronis was supported with $347,000. The PAC and its affiliates have poured around $170 million into the 2024 US presidential and congressional elections to back candidates who support the crypto industry.
The wins by Patronis and Fine are likely to influence the regulatory environment for crypto in the US. Both candidates have expressed support for crypto innovation, with Fine stating that "Floridians want crypto innovation!" The victories suggest that crypto legislation will continue to see support in the US capital, potentially making it easier for Republican-backed crypto bills to pass through the House and Senate.
The Republican Party would have maintained its House majority even if it had lost both seats in Florida. However, the victories make it more likely that recently introduced crypto bills, such as the Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for US Stablecoins (GENIUS) Act, will progress through the legislative process. Senator Cynthia Lummis also reintroduced a Bitcoin reserve bill, which was referred to the Senate Banking Committee.
The special elections in Florida's 1st and 6th Congressional Districts have been controlled by Republicans for roughly 30 years, but their lead has narrowed in recent years. The victories by Patronis and Fine indicate that the crypto industry's influence in US politics is growing, and that support for crypto-friendly legislation is likely to continue.
