Cramer's $500 Billion "Fix" for Nvidia Is Really a Trade-Off


Jim Cramer this week handed NvidiaNVDA-- a prescription: quintuple its share-buyback program to $500 billion and retire roughly 10% of the company, buying every day and especially hard on down days, Apple-style. His reasoning is easy to follow. A company that keeps roughly doubling its revenue — $96.2 billion last quarter, up 106% from a year earlier — had gained only about 8.2% since late October while the S&P 500 rose 10.7%. If the market won't pay up for that growth, Cramer argues, the cheapest stock to buy is your own.
The part of his arithmetic that everyone repeats is the size. The part worth checking is what a buyback actually is, and what $500 billion has to give up to happen.
A buyback is simply a company repurchasing its own shares and canceling them. There are fewer shares left, so each remaining share owns a larger slice of the same earnings, and earnings per share rises. Management can grow EPS without selling a single extra chip. That mechanic is real, and Nvidia already uses it: it returned a record $26 billion to shareholders in the quarter through July, roughly 60% of free cash flow, above its own 50% target.
But the escalation from $80 billion to $500 billion is not a volume knob. It is a claim about how the cash should be spent, and the first question is whether the money even fits.
The money has a job
Nvidia is fabless — it designs chips but doesn't build them — so its capital spending is tiny, around $7 billion a year. Almost all of its cash goes not into factories but into buying the memory, packaging, and wafers from suppliers that turn into salable GPUs, and into funding the receivables of the hyperscalers buying them. Most of the $500 billion is a commitment against those two uses.
Look at the free cash flow itself. In the first quarter of fiscal 2027 Nvidia generated $48.6 billion; in the second it produced $21.3 billion — a $27 billion sequential collapse that had nothing to do with demand and everything to do with working capital. Receivables ballooned to $63 billion as Nvidia extended payment terms for large customers, pushing days sales outstanding from 45 to 60. Inventory grew to $31.6 billion ahead of a new platform launch. This is a company whose "profit" is being converted into hardware and IOUs in the pipeline, not piling up as idle cash.
The clearest statement of where the money is already committed sits in the balance-sheet footnotes: $279 billion in supply purchase commitments, more than double the $119 billion a quarter earlier, directed mostly at locking in memory. About $267 billion of that is due by fiscal 2029, and partners like Apollo, BlackRock, and Goldman Sachs are already backing $108.5 billion of the guarantees. Nvidia isn't sitting on a $500 billion slush fund; it is pre-spending a huge share of the next two years' cash flow to secure the supply that produces the doubling revenue in the first place.
Against that, $500 billion is four-odd years of the company's entire free cash flow, or much longer if you only commit the portion it typically returns. Cramer's "repurchase 10% of the stock, clockwork, daily" framing reads as a quick lever. The cash to pull it is not quickly available. Half a trillion dollars doesn't "fix" a valuation; it pre-empts a supply buildout.
The trade-off, per dollar
This is where the Apple analogy quietly breaks. Apple's brute-force buybacks worked because Apple was a mature cash machine with a low-growth, low-capex business and no urgent place to deploy its cash. Returning that cash to shareholders beat leaving it idle.
Nvidia is the opposite machine. During a buildout where every committed dollar of supply turns into ~100% revenue growth and ~47% free cash flow margins, the marginal dollar's best use is buying back shares at roughly 28 times trailing earnings — when the same dollar funds a GPU that gets sold at those margins in a few quarters. Retiring a share mechanically lifts EPS; funding supply grows the earnings base that EPS sits on top of. At this growth rate, the reinvestment almost certainly beats the buyback. That is also, not coincidentally, the answer Nvidia's own capital allocators gave in May when they added $80 billion — a real number, and not one-tenth as large as Cramer's.

Skepticism isn't necessarily a mispricing
Cramer frames the stock's lag as proof the market is wrong. It's worth separating the two things that lag. Revenue nearly doubling while the stock trails the index is a genuine gap — that deserves a mark. But the market has concrete reasons to discount the growth, and a buyback doesn't touch any of them.
Gross margins are guided down from 75% toward 71–72% in the fiscal fourth quarter because memory prices are rising faster than Nvidia expected. Receivables and inventory are climbing, which means more of that reported profit is still trapped in the pipeline. And the $279 billion supply bet is a two-sided knife: it secures supply at today's prices, but it becomes a mountain of inventory and commitments if hyperscaler AI spending ever pauses. Those are real, disclosed pressures. Investors paying 23–28 times earnings for a company whose margin is falling and whose cash conversion is stretching are not obviously irrational; they're pricing in that the doubling may not last. A giant buyback signals confidence, but it changes none of the underlying numbers.
None of this makes Nvidia's buyback wrong — it is returning shareholder cash at a record pace and that is a legitimate choice. The mistake is Cramer's framing that the stock is a mispricing a $500 billion repurchase would correct. The lag is either a fair discount to uncertain and increasingly costly growth, or a genuine mispricing; a buyback can't distinguish those, it can only shift the trade-off. The useful question for anyone tempted by "just buy back 10%" is whether HBM prices quit rising, whether the working capital stops draining, and whether the hyperscalers keep buying. Those will decide Nvidia's per-share value. The buyback is just the company spending cash — and that cash, right now, has a higher-paying job than buying its own shares.
