According to Counterpoint Research's global smartphone model sales tracking report, the iPhone 15 was the best-selling smartphone globally in Q3 2024, followed by the iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 15 Pro. Samsung took five spots in the top 10 best-selling smartphones globally, maintaining the largest market share, while Apple followed closely with four spots. This distribution has remained unchanged since 2023, indicating stable consumer preferences. Although Apple's share in the top 10 list slightly decreased, Samsung's share increased, keeping the total market contribution of the top 10 smartphones around 19%.Consumer preference for high-end smartphones is growing, gradually narrowing the market share gap between the iPhone base models and iPhone Pro models. Notably, for the first time, iPhone Pro models accounted for half of the total sales in Q3 this year. This change is helping Apple drive sales of high-priced devices. Moreover, consumers' tendency to opt for the latest iPhone, especially in emerging markets, is further promoting sales of Apple's high-priced models. Apple's attractive retail financing options and trade-in incentives are contributing to this trend, making it easier for consumers of different income levels to adopt the latest iPhone.Samsung's Galaxy S24 maintained its position in the top 10 for the third consecutive quarter in Q3 2024. Additionally, for the first time since 2018, the Galaxy S series entered the top 10 in Q3. The sales of the Galaxy S24 series were mainly driven by strong marketing of its GenAI features. The Galaxy A series from Samsung took four spots in the top 10, benefiting from its wide distribution in different regions and focus on the mid-range market. Samsung accurately positioned these devices, offering competitive prices and long-term software support. However, the share of high-end Galaxy A series phones in the top 10 was squeezed by the Galaxy S series and mid-range Galaxy A phones.Apple and Samsung are further strengthening their high-end positioning through Apple Intelligence and Galaxy AI, respectively, helping them maintain their dominance in the list. Both brands are leveraging GenAI as a differentiating factor in the high-end market.
