Costco Open on Labor Day: New Executive Membership Benefits Enhance Early Shopping Access

Costco plans to enhance its executive membership benefits by implementing a new shopping schedule that provides exclusive early access to its stores. The newly devised shopping schedule will commence with executive members allowed entry from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. from Monday to Friday. On Saturdays, the early access period ends at 9:30 a.m., and normal hours resume. The policy aims to reward the loyalty and commitment of executive members, who constitute a significant portion of Costco’s sales despite being a smaller fraction of the total membership. While executive members are availing these perks, other members, specifically Gold Star and Business members, will need to adjust by shopping within the usual hours post-10 a.m.

This change, originally announced in June, was gradually enforced to offer members time to adapt. The grace period, which allowed all members to shop during the new exclusive hours, ended on August 31. As of the scheduled implementation, store employees will enforce the policy more strictly, ensuring that only executive members benefit from the early shopping window.

Under this revised membership model, executive members, who pay an annual fee of $130, will not only enjoy exclusive shopping hours but are also eligible for a $10 monthly credit on orders exceeding $150 made through Costco's Same-Day delivery service or via Instacart. The company’s efforts to enhance executive membership benefits have, however, not gone without criticism. Some members feel marginalized by these changes, particularly in areas where stores previously opened at 9 a.m., resulting in a perceived loss of shopping time unless they upgrade their membership.
