Costco's policy change for Executive members is set to take full effect at the end of August, marking the conclusion of a grace period that has been in place since June 30. This adjustment aims to enhance the value of the Executive membership, which is Costco's highest tier, requiring a $130 annual fee. With less than half of Costco's 79.6 million members classified as Executive members, they nonetheless account for approximately 73% of the company's sales.
The revised policy allows Executive members early access to
stores, permitting entry an hour earlier than other membership levels on weekdays and Sundays, from 9 am to 10 am. On Saturdays, they are allowed entry 30 minutes early, between 9 am and 9:30 am. Additionally, since July 30, Costco extended its closing hours on Saturdays by one hour, from 6 pm to 7 pm, for all members. While the policy change aligns Costco's membership benefits closer to those of Sam's Club’s Plus membership, it has not been universally well-received. Some shoppers have expressed discontent, viewing the early access as exclusionary and merely a replication of benefits offered by competitors. Criticism has also emerged regarding the impact on elderly non-Executive customers who traditionally wait outside the store for its regular opening.
Employee concerns have surfaced as well, particularly among workers who now face altered schedules. A meat department worker noted the operational challenges posed by the earlier opening, highlighting difficulties in maintaining employee coverage throughout the day.
Despite some complaints, there are Executive members who appreciate the change, arguing that the early access is a justified perk given the premium membership cost. For these members, the extended hours serve as a reward for their loyalty to Costco.
As this policy takes full effect without the grace period, non-Executive members will have to adhere to the new opening hours starting August 31. The adjustment continues to be the subject of mixed reactions among customers and employees, reflecting differing perspectives on how Costco administers its membership benefits.
