CoreWeave is not a conventional cloud company that happens to have borrowed a lot. It is a machine built to borrow. The model works like this: it takes on debt to buy the GPUs and build the data centers that power AI, then signs multi-year contracts with the giants that need that compute — Meta, OpenAI, Anthropic. By the end of June it had contracted roughly $104 billion of future revenue across its backlog. That is the demand side, and it is enormous. The debt is the fuel that turns contracted demand into actual machines.

The numbers make the tension visible. Revenue in the second quarter hit $2.58 billion, more than double the $1.21 billion a year earlier. But the company lost $626 million in the same quarter, and net interest expense reached $640 million — itself more than twice the $267 million it paid a year ago. The scale of the bet shows up in the capital budget: CoreWeave spent about $14.1 billion on property and equipment in just the first half, and free cash flow ran negative to the tune of roughly $10.5 billion over that same stretch. Total debt has gone from about $2 billion at the end of 2023 to roughly $35 billion today.

Now apply the lens that matters in this market. This entire AI data-center buildout is one of the biggest credit-creation engines operating right now — AI hyperscalers issued $121 billion of bonds in 2025 alone, four times their five-year average. CoreWeave is that engine in miniature, a compressed version of the whole sector's funding model. And like any levered machine that must continually refinance, its fate turns less on whether demand exists than on what capital costs.

That is why the stock swings the way it does. In mid-August it fell 12% in a single session as long-term Treasury yields pushed to nearly 20-year highs — the exact input that raises CoreWeave's borrowing costs — while investors rotated out of high-risk growth names. The financing is relentless: the company raised more than $10 billion of unsecured debt and convertible bonds in the second quarter alone, added a $3.1 billion term loan and a $1 billion strategic investment from Jane Street, and the day after its earnings a Goldman-led deal was in the works to fund yet another CoreWeave-leased data center through a roughly $1.15 billion bond sale. Principal needs to be rolled over as fast as it is raised.

This is where the two time horizons have to be kept separate, because they are pushing in different directions.

The secular case is real. If intelligence follows an exponential curve, then demand for the compute that trains and runs these models compounds — and a $104 billion contracted backlog is not a hope, it is signed commitments. Companies that get a quarter of the way into that contract book with real customers deserve to be taken seriously. CoreWeave's gross margin, still thin at roughly 24%, is what you would expect mid-buildout, before scale converts into operating leverage. There is a version of every AI-infrastructure story where the eager minority who positioned early get the compounding.

But none of that removes the cyclical discipline. A powerful long-term thesis that depends on cheap money is still exposed to the moment the cheap money stops being cheap. The market's job is to price the probability that the backlog converts to cash faster than the interest bill compounds — and interest rates are the lever that decides which side wins. CoreWeave is effectively two trades stacked: an exponential-age bet on AI demand, and a leveraged bet that the cost of capital stays low enough, long enough, for the buildout to be harvested. When sentiment turns bearish at a stock near its lows with record revenue, the contrarian reflex is to lean against it — but conviction requires the data, not the gut. Watch the cash conversion, watch the margin, watch whether demand survives a higher-rate world, not the daily quote.

The $35 billion is not a red flag waving over an otherwise sound business. It is the business.
