The United States is reportedly planning a military strike on Iran's Fordow nuclear facility, a heavily fortified site located deep within a mountain. The potential target is Iran's uranium enrichment facility at Fordow, which is believed to be producing and storing enriched uranium needed for a nuclear weapon. The U.S. is considering several options for targeting the facility, including the use of the GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator bomb, also known as the bunker buster. This bomb is 20 feet long, weighs 30,000 pounds, and is capable of penetrating 200 feet deep into a target before exploding. It contains 5,000 pounds of explosives designed to detonate once it reaches its subterranean target. The bomb is carried by the B-2
stealth bomber, which can carry two of the giant bombs and is currently stationed at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri. The stealth capabilities of the B-2 would not be a factor in a hypothetical bunker buster mission in Iran as Israel's military has destroyed a major part of Iran's air defense systems. The U.S. is also considering other options for targeting the facility, including sustained Israeli strikes, sabotage, nuclear weapons, and diplomacy. However, military analysts believe that Israel might need U.S. military help to destroy Fordow, which is dug beneath a mountain near the city of Qom. The U.S. has not yet given the order to strike, but President Trump has approved an attack plan on Iran and is waiting to see if Tehran agrees to abandon its nuclear program. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has warned about the dangers of attacks on nuclear facilities, including the risk of nuclear contamination. Such attacks have serious implications for nuclear safety, security, and safeguards, as well as regional and international peace and security.Reports suggest that the United States might conduct a military strike targeting Iran's Fordow nuclear facility this weekend.
