It's what the instrument choice tells us about the two very different economic claims you can make on the same company.

Here is what's happened to Alphabet that makes the bond-versus-stock distinction worth pausing on.

Alphabet went from $12 billion in long-term debt to $98.2 billion in roughly eighteen months. That is not a gradual lever-up. That is a company that had essentially no borrowings deciding to fund an AI build-out by borrowing almost $100 billion. In February 2026 alone, it raised roughly $32 billion in a global bond sale that was oversubscribed — investors wanted the paper badly enough that Alphabet increased the offering from $20 billion. In June, it sold $49.6 billion of stock, too, and it's looking at another $25 billion bond offering this month.

The spending is enormous. Alphabet's capital expenditure for the second quarter of 2026 was $44.9 billion — the company burned through $490 million a day on servers, data centers, and networking equipment. Operating income rose 30% to $40.8 billion. The company was extremely profitable — it just chose to spend more than it earned, on purpose, to build infrastructure.

The bondholder gets 4.7% every year regardless. The stockholder gets upside if AI infrastructure generates returns above the cost of capital — and downside if it doesn't. Both positions are rational. They are just not the same position.

Think of it this way. The bond is a claim on Alphabet as it exists today: a dominant search engine, a growing cloud business, a massive subscription base, and a media platform. The stock is a claim on Alphabet as management believes it will become: an AI infrastructure leader that justifies $200 billion in annual spending. The bond gets paid even if the AI bet turns out poorly. The stock has to earn that bet back.

Which raises the practical question: is the bond actually safe?

Alphabet's debt-to-equity ratio is about 0.15. That is low — very low by corporate standards. The company had roughly $300 billion in net cash at the end of 2025 before the bond issuances started, and its balance sheet is AAA-rated territory in terms of credit quality. The operating cash flow of $39 billion per quarter means interest expenses on $100 billion of debt — roughly $4–5 billion annually at current rates — are easily covered. The company is not in distress. It is choosing to spend.

There is, however, a structural shift happening that bondholders should understand. Alphabet is transitioning from a business that generated more cash than it spent to one that is spending more than it generates, with the CFO telling investors this will continue into 2027. That's a change in the company's financial profile that didn't exist six months ago. The debt itself is not risky right now, but the trajectory matters if you are holding bonds that mature in 2035 — ten years from now.

For context on current pricing: a similar Alphabet bond, the 4.5% note maturing in May 2035, was trading in mid-August at roughly 94.6 to 95.4 on the dollar, yielding about 5.2%. Keating likely bought his 4.7% November 2035 bond closer to face value in February, when rates were lower and the negative free cash flow hadn't yet been announced.

It shows that even sophisticated-looking positions on Alphabet can be split into two fundamentally different claims. The stock investor is making a call on AI strategy, management execution, and whether $700 billion in industry-wide hyperscaler spending this year produces proportional returns. The bond investor is making a call on whether Alphabet's existing businesses are durable enough to service $100 billion in debt over the next decade.

You can believe both claims are true at the same time. The advertising and cloud business can keep printing $40 billion in quarterly operating cash while the AI buildout's return profile remains a question. That is exactly the position the bond-versus-stock split allows you to take.

For a regular investor watching Alphabet today, the distinction is useful because the stock's price reflects a blended bet — part confidence in today's earnings, part hope for tomorrow's AI payoff. It's whether, ten years from now when that 4.7% note matures, the market looks back and thinks the company borrowed cheaply to build something transformative — or borrowed cheaply to chase something that should have been funded out of earnings.
