META--

TikTok sellers are promoting $15 vinyl stickers, called Luxe GhostDots, to block or dim the recording light on Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses. The stickers are marketed as a way to discreetly record without others knowing, sparking concerns over digital privacy and platform accountability. Despite Meta's restrictions, the stickers' effectiveness is disputed, with many users reporting they don't work. TikTok's role in promoting these stickers is under scrutiny, with questions about how the platform monitors content.

In a recent trend on TikTok, sellers are promoting $15 vinyl stickers called Luxe GhostDots, designed to block or dim the recording light on Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses. These stickers, marketed as a way to discreetly record without others knowing, have sparked concerns over digital privacy and platform accountability.

The product, listed on the TikTok Shop under the name "Luxe GhostDots 4 Meta Glasses," comes with a sheet of 20 circular, vinyl stickers and sells for around $15, plus shipping. The listing describes the stickers as a "stealth mode" solution to block or dim the bright white recording light. However, the effectiveness of these stickers is disputed, with many users reporting that they do not work as advertised.

Meta, to its credit, has put an indicator light in its glasses for a reason. When using a pair of its smart glasses, blocking the indicator light will trigger a message saying that photo and video capabilities are disabled. Despite this safeguard, users have attempted various strategies to get around it, including drilling into the glasses to fully break the LED indicator inside.

The seller of these "ghost dots" includes an instructional video for how to bypass Meta’s security measures by blocking certain indicators with your hand while the sticker is attached. However, reviews of the product in the TikTok Shop are mainly negative, with users claiming that it doesn’t work as advertised. For instance, one verified purchaser wrote, “Was so excited for these, but the Meta glasses won’t work with this. Great idea, though.”

In response to negative reviews, the seller encourages buyers to try additional methods if they have problems getting around the safeguards for Meta’s smart glasses. However, testing by WIRED showed that these stickers do not effectively bypass Meta’s safety measures [1].

The evening after WIRED’s messages to TikTok, all of Luxe Wrap Stars products were briefly removed from the platform. The next morning, the online storefront was back up and available again for purchasing, vinyl stickers and all.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has highlighted the growing popularity of the company’s smart glasses, with sales more than tripling compared to the same period last year. Zuckerberg envisions a future where smart glasses are so widely adopted that those who do not wear them will be at a "cognitive disadvantage" [2].

The promotion of these stickers on TikTok raises questions about how the platform monitors content and its role in promoting products that potentially circumvent privacy protections. Despite the concerns, the stickers continue to be sold and promoted on the platform.
