Coinbase: we're proud to be a crypto infrastructure partner of the Department of Commerce on this project
The U.S. Commerce Department has taken a significant step toward modernizing economic reporting by publishing its gross domestic product (GDP) data on blockchain. This initiative, announced by Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, aims to enhance transparency and secure economic statistics. The move follows the Deploying American Blockchains Act of 2025, which granted the Commerce Department authority to lead federal blockchain policy. The Commerce Department began publishing GDP data on nine blockchain networks, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Tron, Stellar, Avalanche, Arbitrum One, Polygon PoS, and Optimism. The data was also disseminated through partnerships with decentralized oracle networks Chainlink and Pyth. These partnerships enable the data to be integrated into the decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem and the broader crypto economy [3].
The initiative marks the first time a federal government agency has published economic data on-chain. The goal is to increase confidence in public information systems through data transparency and to support the development of new types of crypto assets and prediction markets [3].
Coinbase, one of the crypto exchanges that facilitated the Department’s publishing, expressed pride in being a crypto infrastructure partner on this project [4]. The Department has published an official hash of its quarterly GDP data release for 2025 and the topline GDP figure on these blockchains. The data is available as a pdf at [https://www.bea.gov/sites/default/files/2025-08/gdp2q25-2nd.pdf](https://www.bea.gov/sites/default/files/2025-08/gdp2q25-2nd.pdf) [4].
The Commerce Department plans to continue innovating and broadening the scope of its blockchain initiatives. Secretary Lutnick stated, “We are making America’s economic truth immutable and globally accessible like never before, cementing our role as the blockchain capital of the world” [4].
