Coinbase has launched a beta version of its API-powered embedded wallet solution, enabling developers to integrate self-custodied cryptocurrency wallets directly into their applications. The new offering, part of the Coinbase Developer Platform (CDP), is designed to streamline the onboarding process for users by eliminating the need for seed phrases or external wallet downloads. Developers can now incorporate wallet creation, token swaps, fiat onramps, and staking features via a unified API, all while leveraging the same security infrastructure used by Coinbase’s core trading products [1].
A key feature of the embedded wallets is the integration of Web2-style authentication methods such as email, SMS, or OAuth, which significantly reduces friction for users. This approach is aimed at making crypto access more intuitive for those unfamiliar with traditional wallet management. Additionally, the wallet infrastructure is built using Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs) to isolate key operations and enhance security [1].
Coinbase Onramp customers will have access to the embedded wallets at no cost until September 30, 2025, in an effort to encourage early adoption during the beta phase. The company highlighted several potential use cases, including remittance platforms, DeFi marketplaces, gaming ecosystems, and B2B payroll systems. Examples such as Zylu and Stablelink demonstrate the technology’s ability to facilitate instant cross-border payments and simplified donation flows [1].
Developers can begin testing the embedded wallets by running a single command—npm create @coinbase/cdp-app—which generates a wallet tied to an email in under 200 milliseconds. Comprehensive documentation is also available, covering advanced functions such as token transfers and swaps. The platform’s release underscores Coinbase’s broader strategy to position itself as a critical infrastructure provider in the Web3 space [1].
This move reflects Coinbase’s growing focus on developer tools and infrastructure, a trend that aligns with the company’s long-term vision of expanding its role beyond retail users into enterprise and software development environments. By offering a seamless and secure API for wallet integration, Coinbase is helping to lower the technical barriers for developers, which could accelerate the adoption of crypto features across a wide range of platforms.
The release of the embedded wallet beta on July 26, 2025, comes at a time when demand for integrated crypto solutions is rising across fintech, e-commerce, and decentralized applications. As more platforms seek to incorporate blockchain capabilities without building their own wallet infrastructure, the availability of robust tools like these could play a key role in mainstreaming digital assets [1].
