Coherent's AI Mix Is Winning-So Why Is COHR Still Bleeding?

Coherent's beat still came with a post-earnings drop
Coherent's quarter was strong on the numbers, but the market's reaction was not. The company reported Q3 FY2026 revenue of $1.81 billion, including $1.4 billion of Datacenter and Communications revenue, and non-GAAP EPS of $1.41-yet the stock still fell about 7% after hours. That leaves investors with the core question: demand looks real, but confidence in how far the market has already priced that demand does not.
What the market appears to be pricing
Bulls can point to a meaningful mix shift. Coherent's datacenter business now makes up 75% of third-quarter 2026 revenues and is growing rapidly, which supports the case that AI networking demand is changing the company's revenue mix. Bears, though, are focused less on the beat and more on positioning. After a sharp rally across photonics names, investors may be demanding harder proof that the growth is durable, not just another headline rally.
Why the first few sessions matter more than the beat
This reaction fits a broader pattern in the sector, where strong results have not automatically prevented sell-the-news behavior. That makes the first few sessions after earnings more important than the raw beat. Price action should show whether buyers are treating the pullback as an entry or using strength to trim an already-popular position.
Coherent's mix shift is improving profitability, not just revenue
The sell-off may reflect skepticism about how long this stretch of strength will last, but the quarter itself shows CoherentCOHR-- improving in a constructive way.
The revenue mix is moving toward the AI-linked engine
Datacenter & Communications contributed 75% of third-quarter revenue and grew 41% year over year. That matters because it is not just a one-quarter top-line bump. It shows a deeper shift toward the part of the business tied to AI networking buildout. At the same time, non-GAAP operating margin reached 20.3%, up 163 basispoints year over year, which suggests the mix shift is helping profitability as well.
Why this mix change could be durable
The company also described the quarter as being supported by backlog, LTAs, and capacity-driven revenue conversion, with more high-value AI-fabric content shipping. In practical terms, that means Coherent is selling more of the products and systems that matter most in modern AI infrastructure, not just more commodity volume.
The supply side matters too. Coherent expects its six-inch indium phosphide output to double internal capacity by end of 2026. If demand remains firm, that expansion gives the company a clearer path to turn backlog into shipments.
COHR's next move depends on breadth, not just one quarter
After the post-earnings break, the question is no longer whether demand exists. It is whether the next few sessions show recovery buying or distribution from investors exiting a trade that had become crowded. Even after record results, COHRCOHR-- still fell about 7% after hours.
What could support a recovery
A recovery is more likely if weakness is bought across the sector, not just in Coherent's standalone print. Broader AI-capex signals will matter here; if hyperscaler spending remains firm, existing holders are more likely to absorb supply instead of treating the quarter as an exit point.
What would keep pressure on the stock
If broader AI spending signals weaken, or if valuation concern outweighs the quality of the quarter, the stock may continue to trade as a positioning story rather than a fundamentals story.
The stock's move changed the bar for another rerating
The issue is not quarter quality. It is how crowded the trade had become. After a move of over 100% in the past 12 months, Coherent became one of the easier optical names to own on momentum, so another good quarter was no longer enough on its own. Then the post-earnings tape did the opposite of what bulls wanted: COHR still fell about 7% after hours.
The bull case still rests on present-tense AI demand
Bulls do not need to win the long-term CPO debate to make the case. They need to show that Coherent is already earning its rerating through current AI infrastructure demand, including backlog, LTAs, and capacity-driven revenue conversion. The company is also already tied to optical transceivers and networking technologies used in AI clusters, so the core growth argument is based on products that are shipping now rather than only on a future narrative.
What to watch over the next 5–10 sessions
Watch whether dips attract buyers, whether sector peers stabilize, and whether the stock can hold any recovery against broader AI names. That tape will matter more than the headline beat for the next leg.
