CNXN's 47% YTD Run: Does AI Backlog, EPS Power, and the New Dividend Really Change the Story?
CNXN is being judged more on earnings conversion than on growth alone
CNXN is increasingly being valued less like a passive IT reseller and more like a solutions provider helping customers operationalize AI. Management said Q1 demand benefited from customers moving from AI experimentation to AI production, while net sales rose 3.0% and adjusted diluted EPS reached $0.77. The key change is not explosive revenue growth; it is the fact that modest sales growth is translating into disproportionately stronger earnings.
The market is adding a maturity narrative
A 47.93% year-to-date return has put more eyes on the stock, but the deeper shift is qualitative. The board's new $0.20 quarterly dividend signals a more mature capital-return profile, which can broaden the shareholder base beyond pure growth investors. That helps explain why the conversation is moving from "can it grow?" to "does it deserve a higher-quality multiple?"
Backlog and mix, not headline sales, are doing the work
This quarter's story was not a dramatic sales breakout. It was better conversion of demand into profit.
Gross billings and earnings showed the leverage
Gross billings of $1.0 billion rose 4.3%, above the 3.0% increase in net sales. In a low-margin distribution model, that gap matters because it suggests demand remained healthy even before it all hit revenue. The income statement showed the effect more clearly: net income increased 27.8%, and adjusted diluted EPS was $0.77 versus $0.60 a year earlier.
Enterprise demand supports the AI deployment angle
Management tied Q1 demand to customers moving from AI experimentation to AI production, and the segment data gives that some support. Enterprise Solutions net sales rose 16.3%, while Business Solutions net sales increased 6.6%. That combination points to larger customers continuing to buy networking, endpoint, security, and cloud-related solutions as deployments expand.
At the same time, some backlog appears tied to customers ordering ahead of potential shortages and price increases. That makes the backlog real, but it also means part of it may reflect supply-chain caution rather than pure AI-led demand.
Margin durability is now the harder question
A backlog only supports a richer valuation if it converts cleanly into margins. Q1 was only partly clean. Business Solutions gross margin declined by 80 basis points to 24.5%, and Public Sector Solutions experienced a 31% decline in net sales year-over-year due to a large non-recurring federal contract. So the earnings beat reflected more than AI strength; cost actions and mix also helped.
What to watch next: - whether gross billings continue to grow faster than net sales - whether Enterprise Solutions remains the main growth engine - whether Business Solutions gross margin stabilizes
The dividend may broaden ownership, but it also raises the bar
The dividend is less a new growth engine than a proof point on financial discipline. Once CNXNCNXN-- established an $0.20 quarterly dividend, investors have a cleaner way to judge whether the business can sustain cash generation. That case looks more credible with $411.4 million in cash equivalents and short-term investments, but the payout also makes the stock easier to evaluate on durability rather than narrative alone.

After a 47% YTD run, confirmation matters more than possibility
The stock has already rerated sharply, including a 47.93% year-to-date return and a 12.34% gain in the last 30 days. That does not make the thesis wrong, but it does mean the market is no longer paying for potential alone. It is paying for follow-through.
The next check comes after the current quarter
Jul. 29, 2026 is listed in earnings history as a Q2 signpost, so the next major reality check is whether operating momentum can keep outrunning a stock that has already rallied. The bull case needs continued backlog conversion and stable or improving margins. The bear case only needs evidence that recent strength was driven more by momentum than by durable economics.
For now, the real question is straightforward: does CNXN deserve a premium multiple for AI-adjacent execution, or has the crowd already priced most of that story in?
