On November 18, the X platform confirmed that its recent outage had been resolved, according to a report from Lookonchain. The disruption, which began earlier in the week, coincided with widespread service failures linked to Cloudflare, a web infrastructure provider. DownDetector recorded over 11,500 user reports of X outages in the U.S., while Cloudflare acknowledged "widespread 500 errors" impacting services like X and ChatGPT. Cloudflare shares (NET) fell 3.5% in pre-market trading as the outage spread to crypto platforms including Arbiscan and BitMEX.

OpenAI reported partial user access issues to its platform and website during the incident.

While the exact cause of the X outage remains under investigation, Cloudflare cited scheduled maintenance at its Santiago data center as a potential contributing factor. The outage disrupted major apps and services, including PayPal, Uber, and League of Legends, raising concerns about the reliability of internet infrastructure providers.

The incident also reignited scrutiny over OpenAI's broader legal challenges. A separate antitrust lawsuit filed by Elon Musk's X Corp alleges that Apple and OpenAI colluded to monopolize the smartphone and AI chatbot markets. The case, set to proceed in Fort Worth, Texas, claims Apple's integration of ChatGPT into its App Store ecosystem stifled competition. OpenAI has denied the allegations, calling the lawsuit part of Musk's "ongoing pattern of legal challenges."

Financial markets reacted swiftly to the outages. Cloudflare's stock slid 3.7% pre-market, while X's downtime drew attention to its role in Musk's vision for a global AI-powered social network.
