Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) has released an update on the devastating impact Hurricane Helene has had on its facilities and operations. The Category 4 storm, which hit the Florida coast on September 26, caused widespread damage across Clearwater Beach, Tampa Bay, and the Southeast U.S.

The aquarium, located in Clearwater, Florida, was severely impacted by the storm. High storm surge and flooding led to extensive water damage, with over 4 feet of water entering the facility. Vital equipment, including life support systems, freezers, lab equipment, and air compressors, were damaged or lost. Elevators were flooded, and lower areas sustained significant water damage.

CMA's two manatee patients, Yeti and Zamboni, were temporarily transported to ZooTampa at Lowry Park for safety. Sea turtles in rehabilitation were also transferred to The Coastal Stewards at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton. All other resident animals are safe, but some have been moved within the facility to ensure their security while habitats are repaired.

The aquarium remains closed until further notice, with extensive damage and cleanup efforts ongoing in Clearwater Beach. CMA is seeking donations to replace vital equipment lost during the storm. Lab equipment, laundry machines, air compressors, and other essential tools are needed. Visit CMA's wishlist page to purchase an item or email donate@cmaquarium.org for information on how to donate pre-owned items.

CMA's closure has significantly impacted its revenue streams and visitor numbers. The aquarium is a major tourist attraction in the area, and the storm's aftermath has led to a decrease in visitors. The long-term effects on CMA's reputation and brand value are yet to be determined, but the aquarium is working diligently to repair and reopen as quickly as possible.

Government aid and insurance will play a crucial role in helping CMA and other local businesses recover and rebuild. The extent of the damage and the aquarium's insurance coverage will determine the financial stability of CMA in the long term. As the tourism industry in Clearwater Beach and Tampa Bay recovers, CMA will need to adapt and innovate to mitigate the long-term effects of Hurricane Helene on its revenue streams.
