On Thursday, Anthropic, a startup in artificial intelligence, unveiled Claude 4, an advanced model capable of operating independently for seven hours, essentially completing what could be likened to a full human work shift.

The Claude 4 model comes in two versions: Claude Opus 4 and Claude Sonnet 4. Both are crafted to adhere to instructions with precision while handling tasks like code writing and addressing complex queries autonomously.

According to Anthropic, Claude Opus 4 is hailed as the "world’s best coding model," engineered to function almost continuously for a complete work shift. This breakthrough might influence job dynamics, possibly leading to AI replacements in certain positions, while reshaping how AI is utilized—from executing singular tasks to embarking on broader objectives akin to managing a colleague.

Designed as a tool for automating daily tasks, Anthropic asserts its AI models aim to complement employment rather than eliminate it. They aid users in conducting web searches and toggling between reasoning and tool application. With permissions in place, the models can read files on user computers to identify critical data for retention, thereby enhancing user assistance and intelligence over time.

Anthropic's Chief Scientist Jared Kaplan shared that last year, the company pivoted from developing chatbots to enhancing Claude's ability to tackle complex assignments such as research and programming, even to the extent of crafting entire codebases.

Kaplan noted that the more intricate the task, the higher the propensity for large models to deviate from expectations. Therefore, efforts were concentrated on resolving this issue to enable substantial delegation of tasks to their model.

Anthropic’s establishment, spearheaded by OpenAI veterans Daniela and Dario Amodei, aims at crafting generative AI models that rival those of OpenAI and are developed with greater responsibility. As one of the most prominent startups besides OpenAI, Anthropic is attracting considerable interest.

The launch of Anthropic's new model coincides with an increasing investment in artificial intelligence across various companies. A study by Menlo Ventures indicated that corporate spending on generative AI will see a sixfold increase in 2024 compared to 2023, with Anthropic doubling its market share at the expense of OpenAI’s dominance in AI commercial services.

However, there is mounting concern among experts regarding AI’s impact on employment. The World Economic Forum, in its Future of Jobs Report published early this year, highlighted that as generative AI plays a greater role in job functions, 41% of employers plan to downsize their workforce.
