Chinese Scientists Convert Waste PET into Biodegradable PGA
The Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Chemistry has achieved a significant breakthrough in the development of biodegradable plastics. The research team, led by Professor Chen Yong, has successfully created a new electro-synthesis strategy that converts discarded PET plastic into glycolic acid, a key component in the production of biodegradable PGA (polyglycolic acid). This innovation addresses the critical challenges associated with traditional synthesis methods, which rely on highly toxic precursors and are difficult to scale up for mass production.
The team's approach involves the electrocatalytic reformation of PET, a process that not only transforms waste plastic into a valuable chemical but also significantly reduces the environmental impact of plastic waste. The economic and technical analysis conducted by the team indicates that the cost of producing PGA through this electrocatalytic reformation route is approximately 1240.12 USD per ton. This cost is comparable to that of conventional polyolefin plastics, making the technology economically viable for industrialization.
In their research, the team systematically analyzed two major challenges in the conversion process from PET to PGA: the low space-time yield of ethylene glycol to glycolic acid and the high cost of separating and purifying glycolic acid crystals. By addressing these issues, the team has paved the way for the full-scale conversion of discarded PET plastic into biodegradable PGA, a material with significant market potential.
This breakthrough is a crucial step towards addressing the global plastic pollution problem. By converting waste PET into biodegradable PGA, the research team has demonstrated a sustainable solution that not only reduces plastic waste but also creates a valuable product. This innovation has the potential to revolutionize the plastics industry and contribute to a more sustainable future. The development of this technology aligns with the growing demand for biodegradable plastics, which is expected to reach a market scale of hundreds of thousands of tons in the future.
